Microsoft says its Surface tablets are close to selling out. Hmm...Time for a reality check.
First, a mea culpa. I wrote a story or two last year about Surface selling out. While technically accurate, it belied the catastrophe in the making for the first-generation Surface RT.
And here we go again. "It...looks like pre-order stock of the Surface 2 (64GB) and Surface Pro 2 (256 GB and 512GB) are close to selling out," Microsoft said in its official Surface blog on Wednesday.
That's good marketing, if nothing else. But I'm guessing that doesn't … Read more
Big Font Pro lets you make your font bigger or smaller and gives you more options than Android's default choices. Sadly, it only works with the fonts already on your Android and doesn't give you any bonus fonts or add-ons. It will give you a bigger font with more size increments than your Android's settings menu, though.
This app lets you control your font size with a sliding scale, ranging from 0 to 200 percent. We were pleased to find that if you use Android's Small, Normal, Big, or Really Big options, Big Font Pro adjusts … Read more
Screenshot Maker Pro allows you to create screenshots with a digital photo of your iPhone as the frame. The app doesn't offer clear instructions and lacks some features that would make the editing process a lot more customizable, but the digital iPhone looks great and the resulting screenshots are perfect for sharing or even for using on your Web site, as a promotional tool.
When you open Screenshot Maker Pro it will show a picture of the iPhone you are using for your screenshot borders. This can be changed in the settings menu, as well. You can then add … Read more
The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 "are close to selling out," Microsoft's developers account tweeted earlier Friday.
At this time, it's unclear how many tablets Microsoft made and what "close to selling out" actually means. A Microsoft spokesman declined to provide information about how many devices the company built but reiterated that inventory is low at Microsoft stores and at the company's site, with some models shipping later than the slated October 22 release date.

Given that the Bay Area's home to countless entrepreneurs, computer programmers, and just plain geeks, it's no surprise that our local hotels are starting to follow suit. Hotel Zetta's just a couple blocks away from the CNET headquarters and is helping lead the way by making technology a priority in the hospitality industry. They keep it fresh with Wii Street U, Livescribe Echo smartpens, and an old phone booth equipped with a tablet for skyping. They also sport some old-school vibes like Ataris and record players. Oh yeah, and there's a giant Plinko game that takes … Read more
Apple has released a number of SMC firmware updates for its line of MacBooks, starting with the mid-2012 models through to its latest mid-2013 models. This includes the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and the MacBook Air.
The updates address problems specific to battery function, where systems may stop responding when the battery charge gets low, or the battery simply stops providing power.
If you have one of the affected systems you should be able to get the relevant update through Software Update in the Apple menu. The updates can also be downloaded from the following Apple … Read more
Almost exactly like the new Surface Pro 2, Dell's Venue 11 Pro is one tablet that works in three different ways. You can use it as a typical Windows 8.1 tablet, snap it into a keyboard dock and use it like a laptop, or remotely connect it to a dock hooked up to a monitor or TV to play movies and TV shows on a larger screen.
The Venue is a black-bodied tablet that looks pretty much how all Windows 8 tablets look, with a moderate-size bezel around the screen and the standard Windows logo Home button. It … Read more
With mobile phones gobbling up much of what used to be the camera market, it's hard to imagine that a new company could find a niche. But that's exactly what GoPro has done.
On Tuesday, it announced its Hero3+ upgrade to its line of compact, durable videocameras that customers attach to cars, surfboards, quadcopters, birds, and bike helmets.
GoPro introduced the Hero3 in 2012, bringing Wi-Fi support that made it easier to use cameras that don't necessarily have an LCD. The Hero3+ adds improvements to performance image quality, GoPro said.
According to the company, the top-end $400 … Read more
