Man puts magnets under skin to hold iPod Nano

File this one under extreme fanboyism. A Newfield, N.J., man performed his own surgery to put magnets under his skin to hold his iPod Nano in place like a watch. Evidently nobody told him they make straps that do the same job.

The bloke in question is Dave Hurban, a tattoo artist working in collaboration with Kaleidoscope Kreative, an advertising and Web design and development company. His background in all things pointy, ink-filled, and painful means he's at least used to foreign objects invading his person, but this project, called "iDermal," really seems a step too far.

In the video you can see Dave going through the painstaking (pain being the key word here) process of measuring the Nano, marking out the spots on his wrist, and then setting about drilling into his own flesh to insert the four magnets. It's frankly rather grim, so if you're squeamish and prone to fainting at the slightest sight of blood then we suggest you watch it while lying on some cushions.

Is HTC prepping an iPod Touch rival?

A newly uncovered patent design from HTC indicates that the "quietly brilliant" hardware maker could be secretly working on a personal media player.

Initially discovered and detailed by Patent Bolt, the filing reveals that the company applied for the patent in 2011, and the device appears to have a design that falls in line with HTC's recent smartphone offerings.

iBooks is a stylish, crisp-looking, colorful e-book reader and storefront that runs on Apple's iOS devices. The latest version of the software includes support for textbooks, a new addition to the iBookstore for students.

Hungry for Mass Effect? Buy the console game. As far the simultaneously-released iOS game for iPhone and iPad goes, I'd recommend downloading Dead Space instead.

So, maybe it's a tiny bit unfair to compare a $60 console game to a $6.99 iOS game, but when the name "Mass Effect" is slapped on a download, there is some expectation of a certain style of game, and a certain level of quality. Mass Effect: Infiltrator is downright beautiful to look at, especially in its opening cinematics: at first, it could cause an onlooker to drop their jaw and proclaim that the iPad is the true inheritor of the future of handheld and even console games.

iPhone 5 will reportedly launch in the fall

The iPhone 5 will make its debut in the fall, at least according to Japanese blog Macotakara.

Pointing to a scoop from an "Asian reliable source," the site says that Apple will unveil its next iPhone in September or October and maintain that same launch cycle for years.

In the past Apple has traditionally released its latest iPhone in the early summer, with the iPhone 4 and 3GS reaching customers in June and the 3G in early July. But last year the company broke the mold by delaying the debut of the iPhone 4S until October.
