Apple has released several new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Drivers in the update include printers and scanners from Brother, Infotec, Lanier, Gestetner, Ricoh, Savin, and NRG. Printer drivers can be downloaded via Software Update in Mac OS X or individually at each respective company's website.… Read more
When it comes to graphics performance in OS X, Apple has taken the conservative approach and focused on compatibility and stability in drivers instead of including the cutting-edge and highly tweaked drivers and graphics systems that bring the best quality to performance-related applications like games.
This compatibility-based approach may be good for productivity applications to prevent potential crashes, but has kept Apple behind when it comes to gaming performance. For awhile this was not an issue, but the recent release of Valve's "Steam" client for the Mac along with a few other gaming titles have not only … Read more
Device drivers allow hardware devices and computer programs to interact, so they're obviously an integral part of proper computer function. When drivers go missing or become out of date they can slow down system performance and create other problems. DriverGuide DriverScan is an easy way to scan your computer for outdated drivers. Unfortunately, although the program is free, you're going to have to pay if you want to update your drivers with it.
DriverGuide DriverScan is incredibly easy to use, which is a good thing, because there's no Help file. The program opens with a plain screen … Read more

Mercedes-Benz is putting robot stunt drivers in the front seat in the hopes that bots can make the cars safer for humans.
Mercedes says its production-series cars equipped with robotic systems are the first in the world to test computer-controlled safety maneuvers, such as near-misses, that can't be reproduced by human drivers.
In the test cars, separate robot systems control steering, acceleration, and braking. An onboard computer runs the machines so the vehicle follows a programmed course on a closed test track.
Aside from collision avoidance in near-misses, Mercedes says it's examining maneuvers such as merging at different … Read more
Sometimes when troubleshooting aspects of programs or OS features, we may assume some things are not related to the problem we are experiencing, either by dismissing them or more commonly by just overlooking them as a potential contributor to the problem at hand.… Read more
Researchers at Berlin's Free University today announced they have developed new technology that lets drivers steer cars using only their eyes.
Raul Rojas, an artificial intelligence researcher at the Institute of Computer Science, and his team from the Artificial Intelligence Group demonstrated how they can steer a specially equipped vehicle with one eye.
A demonstration took place at the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport using a Dodge Caravan called Spirit of Berlin.
Using EyeDriver, the driver wears a converted bicycle helmet that is equipped with two cameras and an infrared LED. One of the cameras points in the same direction … Read more
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., better known as the maker of Subaru automobiles, announced that it has completed the development of a new driver aid system called "New EyeSight." The New EyeSight setup is based on Subaru's current old EyeSight system, which debuted in May 2008 and has been available since then in Japanese Subaru vehicles; it features dual forward-facing cameras to give the vehicle stereoscopic vision for pedestrian detection. The new rig integrates with the other driver assist systems to improve overall vehicle safety. How come we never see this sort of tech in Subaru's North … Read more
HP on Tuesday lifted the curtain on three new laser jet printers for small businesses, the first batch of HP devices to include the company's new "Smart Install" feature that eliminates the need for a separate driver installation CD. The HP team showed me this technology in a briefing last month. It streamlines the installation process down to one simple step: just plug a USB cable into the host computer and you're done--all the drivers you need to establish a connection are embedded within the printer's memory bank so there's no need for external … Read more
