Get ready for spring time with 3D cookies

I'm already thinking about all the cookies I want to bake this spring, as well as looking for cookie cutters to make them with. The 3D Bunny Cookie Cutter particularly caught my eye because the result of your baking is a cookie that can sit up on its own. With just a little royal icing to "glue" the four pieces of cookie together, your bunnies can be centerpieces, decorations, and more--as well as remain a tasty treat. The 3D Bunny Cookie Cutter is actually a set of four heavy-gauge stainless steel cookie cutters that cut the pieces … Read more

Cookie crumbler

Flash Cookie Cleaner offers to help clean up your computer and eliminate unwanted and unneeded cookies. While this may sound like a big task, this program breaks the job down into its simplest pieces for incredible ease.

The program's interface could not have been simpler, which was a delightful surprise. Scaled down to three simple command buttons, we were not upset that the program had no Help file or instructions, since we didn't need them. The program scanned our computer for cookies and behavior-tracking files. We were able to view each of these cookies and determine whether they … Read more

IOBit 360 refreshed for Windows 7

IOBit 360 is a relative newcomer on the antimalware scene, although the Chinese publisher is known for making solid utility software such as Smart Defrag. It's a fast and welterweight freeware utility for detecting and removing malware, and plugging your system's security holes before they can been exploited. The new improvements in version 1.10 include integration with the Windows 7 security center, a new feature that creates a USB key-portable version, a toolbar, and scan engine tweaks.

If you're unfamiliar with the program, it's fairly simple to figure out and use. The interface has large … Read more

All the cookie cutters you'll ever need

More than once, I've had the whole family ready to make cookies, only to find that I don't have enough cookies cutters of the right kind to go around. I might have two or three holiday cookie cutters, but having a few extra cookie cutters--especially ones that can be used for every occasion--comes in handy. The 101 Cookie Cutter Set from Wilton provides more than enough cookie cutters for anything you can think of. Among the shapes that come in this bucket are a full set of letters and numbers, as well as different holiday, sports, animal and … Read more

Trick or treat cookies

Rather than hunting up your Halloween cookie cutters and rolling out a batch of cookie dough, this year you can bake Halloween cookies in Wilton's new Halloween cookie pan. Getting cookies shaped like ghosts, mummies, and spider webs is just a matter of rolling cookie dough into balls and placing it in each of the 12 cavities of of the cookie pan. As the cookies bake, they'll take on the shape of the Halloween designs. When you take the pan out of the oven, it's easy to remove the cookies: not only is the pan nonstick, but … Read more

Pink ribbons in cookie form

We're getting close to October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You'll soon be seeing pink ribbons--the symbol of support for breast cancer awareness and research--just about everywhere, and you can create a few of your own with the Pink Ribbon Cookie Kit. Rather than offering ribbons for supporters to wear, though, you'll be able to make cookies for them to eat. The kit includes everything you need to make dozens of pink ribbon cookies: not only does it offer a cookie cutter, but it also has sugar cookie mix, icing, pink food coloring, and pink … Read more

Bake up some Legos

Even though I'm an adult, I'm known to pull out the bucket of Legos and play fairly often. They're great for sparking the imagination--and that's now true in the kitchen, as well.

The Rolling Cookie Cutter from Lego allows you to make cookies in the shape of Lego bricks. The roller cuts cookies into 2x2 squares, one of the standard sizes for Lego pieces, with each cookie measuring about 1 inch by 1 inch. The Rolling Cookie Cutter uses plastic for the actual cookie cutter, mounted on a stainless steel handle with a silicone grip.

Add some consistency to your cookies

As rewarding as it is to make a pie crust from scratch, it's not an easy task. The first challenge is achieving the flaky texture pie crust is best known for, and in shooting for this flaky goal, many cooks sacrifice uniformity in thickness. Sure, the texture will end up nice, but having the texture in addition to a nice even thickness adds both to the visual presentation of the pie and the consistency in the texture across every piece.

If you haven't mastered this art freehand, don't fret: this Adjustable Rolling Pin available at the MoMA … Read more

Pizzelles without a press

Pizzelles are one of my favorite cookies: they're wafer-thin and have wafflelike patterns baked into them. The patterns can get quite elaborate, with particularly fancy patterns used for cookies meant for entertaining. But pizzelles are nearly impossible to make without a maker like the VillaWare Prego Pizzelle Baker. The cookies are so thin that the only way to get the crisp texture and delicate patterns is to drop dough straight onto the baker's hot surfaces and lock the top and bottom plates together. As little as 30 seconds later, you'll have a hot pizzelle. The baker makes … Read more
