Microsoft may have cooked up a new Windows 8 app that can display a variety of different files.
Code-named Office Reader, the app supports Office documents, PDFs, Web pages, e-books, and electronic textbooks, according to The Verge. Citing sources familiar with Microsoft's Office plans, The Verge said that the app was demoed at an employee-only meeting on Thursday by Kirk Koenigsbauer, a corporate VP in charge of Microsoft Office.
Beyond just displaying different files, Office Reader will let you interact with them. For example, users of Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet could use a Surface Pro stylus to mark … Read more
How do you get your favorite author to autograph a book when it's digitally stored in iTunes? Apple may have a way.
Published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, a patent appropriately called "Embedding an autograph in an electronic book" envisions how an author can wirelessly send an autograph to a nearby mobile device.
The e-book would contain a special autograph page, or the device itself would allow the page to be generated on the fly by the author. Using a special app such as iBooks Author, the author would send an autograph to the … Read more

The Mac version also supports USB attach SCSI (UAS) connectivity, which helps increase the speed of connected USB 3.0 storage devices.
A U.S. judge made comments Monday that suggest favor for Google's defense of its digital books project, which could hobble an authors group's effort to stop it.
The Authors Guild, which represents the interests of authors, says the project constitutes massive copyright infringement. Google, which has scanned more than 20 million books since forming partnerships with several major universities to digitize their research libraries in 2004, argues that the project is exempt under the "fair use" provision of copyright law because it shows only short "snippets" of text online.

It's the eternal struggle of good versus evil, but in the end, only one thumb can truly triumph. To emerge as victor, you will need to train hard with your Jedi master teacher, the "Star Wars Lightsaber Thumb Wrestling" book.
The book from Chronicle Books is actually more of a kit. It includes two mini-lightsabers for you and an opponent to strap to your thumbs using Velcro. Two thumb-sized holes go all the way through the book, giving you the proper distance between battling digits.… Read more
The feature, known as "Collections," allows customers to add their content to multiple categories instead of just one. For example, "A Game of Thrones" can be included in "My Favorites" as well as "Fantasy Epics."
The company also tweaked the app's design around the themes of "deference, clarity, and depth." The flatter-style controls provide a sharper appearance, while translucency effects "keep constant connection … Read more
