Apple's new Maps app could integrate Yelp check-ins

Apple will reportedly tie Yelp directly into its upcoming iOS 6 Maps apps to let you share your whereabouts with other people.

Sneaking a peek at the the Apple developer kit doled out to programmers this month, Bloomberg uncovered screenshots of the Yelp check-in feature within the new Maps app.

Yelp helps users find and review local restaurants and other businesses. But the app's check-in feature lets you share your travels with others so they can spot your location and see which businesses you frequent.

iPhone 5 prototypes reportedly reveal NFC support

The next iPhone could let users buy products and share files through near field communication.

Code pulled from Pre-EVT (Engineering Verification Testing) iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2 prototypes by 9to5Mac leads the Apple enthusiast site to believe that NFC chips and an antenna will be built into this year's iPhone.

If true, it means Apple would finally jump onto the mobile payments bandwagon, allowing its users to purchase goods and services directly through their smartphones. This latest rumor also comes on top of the company's launch of Passbook, a feature slated for iOS 6 that would … Read more

iPhone 5 to be true 3G/4G world phone, says analyst

The iPhone 5 will not only offer a major refresh but expand its appeal around the world, according to one analyst.

The sixth-generation iPhone is expected to sport three big improvements, says analyst Shaw Wu. Picking up intel from suppliers, Wu sees a new form factor, a slightly larger screen, and 4G LTE support built into Apple's next flagship phone. These features should help the upcoming iPhone outscore the iPhone 4 and 4S at picking up new customers and enticing existing ones to upgrade.

Other reports and various rumors have pointed to a redesigned body, a 4-inch screen, and … Read more

What iOS 6 tells us about the next iPhone

Apple's WWDC may not have resulted in an iPhone announcement, but it provided the next best thing: a detailed look at iOS 6.

It doesn't come out until the fall, and will only work on the iPhone 3GS and models after that, but a lot of iOS 6 features will be welcomed by any iPhone owner.

New versions of mobile software (be it iOS or Android) can often be as feature-packed and exciting as new phone models, and frequently kick a lot of new value down to older hardware.

The question is, can we look into the new features of iOS 6 to peer upstream at what Apple's next iPhone might be like? I'll try. Here are my best guesses.… Read more

iPhone 5, iOS 6 may launch in September, says analyst

Apple users waiting for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 could see both pop up by early September.

"We expect Apple to unveil iOS 6 GM (Golden Master) in early September," KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note obtained by AppleInsider. "Based on the release schedule for iOS 6 GM, there is a very good chance iPhone 5 will start shipping also in early September."

Last year, Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S in October, which meant a slow calendar third quarter as consumers held off purchases in anticipation of the new model. Kicking off the … Read more

iPhone 5 to offer 4-inch, 16:9 screen with HD camera, says analyst

Buyers waiting for the next iPhone could be greeted with a larger screen, higher aspect ratio, and better quality camera, at least if KGI analyst Mingchi Kuo is on the money.

In a new research report detailed by AppleInsider, Kuo said he believes the iPhone 5's screen will measure 4.08 inches, offer a resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels, and boost the aspect ratio to 16:9.

Typically relying on intel from Apple supply chain sources, the analyst added that Apple nixed the idea of a screen larger than 4.3 inches. Such phones can be tough … Read more

Apple's digital storefronts rumored to get a face-lift

Apple's trio of digital storefronts are getting a visual overhaul soon, according to a new rumor.

Citing anonymous sources, Apple blog 9to5Mac said today that the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBookstore are getting visual overhauls that will bring "more interactivity." What that actually entails is unclear.

The report adds that the change will also add more social features to store pages. Presumably this would go beyond the current "tell a friend" option that lets you send a quick detail page about the app to someone else by e-mail. 9to5Mac suggests Apple will … Read more

What could Apple have up its sleeve for WWDC?

Apple will likely unveil a new lineup of Macs at its upcoming WWDC, but one analyst thinks the bigger news will be in the software arena.

The iPhone maker is expected to announce iOS 6 at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off June 11, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. Apple announced iOS 5 at last year's WWDC, though the OS didn't reach the market until October.

A new Maps app also has the analyst and other Apple watchers buzzing. Based on industry checks, Wu sees a new in-house Maps app replacing the current Google Maps … Read more

iPhone allegedly bound for Boost Mobile in September

Cricket may have been the first prepaid carrier to snag the iPhone in late June, but if Sprint has its way, it won't be the last.

Apple's iPhone 4 and 4S will head to Sprint prepaid carrier Boost Mobile in early September, according to a "trusted" TechnoBuffalo source.

If Cricket's prices are any indication -- $499.99 for the 16GB iPhone 4S and $399.99 for the 8GB iPhone 4 -- Boost's iPhones wouldn't come cheap. However, prices could dip slightly the closer that Boost Mobile, or any other carrier, gets to Apple'… Read more

Apple seeks to streamline Bluetooth communications in patent application

Apple has filed a patent application detailing a better process for encoding and transmitting data over Bluetooth.

The patent application, uncovered by AppleInsider, was refiled back in February as a continuation of a December 2008 patent application and shows Apple's continued commitment to get the best performance from its mobile, battery-powered devices.

"Data Format Conversion for Electronic Devices" seeks to improve your iDevice's battery by simplifying the data conversion process that occurs when sending information to other devices via Bluetooth connections.

Data sent over a Bluetooth connection must be compressed due to limited transmission capacity of … Read more
