The technology that powers your Kindle may soon have military applications. For soldiers in combat zones, gadgets like GPS and heads-up displays are fantastically useful, provided they have the battery to power them. One of the most power-hungry components in these devices is the screen. While we may have reached a point where a gadget can run for days on a single charge, it's still not sufficient for grunts who may be in the field for weeks without access to power.
Bad news: the new MacBook Pros still lack HDMI, a very convenient and increasingly ubiquitous way for any laptop to output its audio and video on to an HDTV or receiver.
Good news: it's slightly easier to connect your MacBook Pro to a TV than it was before.
MacBook Pros now support an audio signal over the Mini DisplayPort jack. Believe it or not, the old MacBooks could only output video through that port, and audio had to be output via a separate audio cable connected to the audio-out jack. We can say from experience that connecting previous MacBooks … Read more

A few people have had problems with their Macs when using multiple monitors, where windows that were put on secondary displays seem to disappear when the display is disconnected. The problem may happen more prevalently in certain setups where the computer is put to sleep and then the monitor is disconnected, but may also happen in other situations as well. Applications should reset their window placement when they are relaunched or when a display configuration is changed, but this may not always automatically occur. However, there are several things you can do to reposition missing windows.… Read more
With the 10.6.3 update Apple addressed a number of graphics-related issues, but in doing so introduced a problem for some people where they cannot get external monitors to either display the native resolution, or in some cases even work at all. When the monitors are connected and detected, the system will display at a resolution that's one step down from the native resolution, causing text and images to appear larger and blurry.… Read more
Want to get digital-policy regulator types fired up? Start talking about behavioral ad targeting, the business of serving up digital ads that are fine-tuned to a user's Web surfing habits, and you're sure to get all kinds of wildly varied opinions about privacy and sensitive data.
But a new study from a group called the Network Advertising Initiative, or NAI, claims that behavioral targeting is more than twice as effective as non-targeted ads, and the inventory from behavioral ads is worth double that of their non-targeted brethren. The study found that 6.8 percent of people who click … Read more

Automaker GM, working with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Southern California, is developing a new head-up display that outlines the road and potential hazards with lasers.
The system would use sensor technology such as infrared cameras, currently used for night vision by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, to look ahead when visibility is poor on dark nights or foggy days. When the cameras see cars, animals, pedestrians, or any other obstacle, lasers would outline them on the windshield. Similarly, the system could see the road ahead when the driver can't, and paint the edges of the road on the … Read more
In some situations your Mac may get to the log-in screen and display it at a different resolution than when it logs in to the desktop. This may result in the log-in window being fairly big with large text, and the screen blinking to black when you log in while it changes resolution.… Read more
