Lenovo narrows horizons with Blue Sky

Slimmed-down PCs are hot right now. But most of the innovation in tiny computers is taking place in the notebook and mobile-phone industries, not the stodgy enterprise desktop space.

No matter, Lenovo has announced that it will launch a tiny, 45-watt desktop computer the size of a phone book. It's called the ThinkCentre A61e, or "Blue Sky," and it will be primarily aimed at businesses and customers overseas--where they still buy desktops.

ThinkPad Reserve is real, but still in your dreams

We're admittedly confused by the press release for Lenovo's ThinkPad Reserve that went across the wires this morning. We already wrote about the leather case, the white-glove service and support, and the (ahem) $5,000 price tag in June. The formerly secretive marketing Web site has had plenty of specs available for months. But today, it seems, marks the official unveiling of the fancy-pants limited-edition laptop, which was created to celebrate the ThinkPad's 15th anniversary.

Olympic laptops headed for auction

There's good news and bad news if you've been dying to get one of those "Cloud of Promise" laptops commemorating the Beijing Olympics, bearing the unique design created for the Olympic torch.

The good news is that some of them will be available through charity auctions benefiting the Lenovo Hope Fund, which is dedicated to sports for children, and many will be autographed by athletes. Lenovo to preload Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop...due to customer demand

That Lenovo is preloading SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop doesn't do much for me. I'm not a big fan of the Linux desktop. But the driving factor behind the announcement...? That interests me a great deal.

As Ars Technica reports,

"We have seen more customers utilizing and requesting open source notebook solutions in education, government, and the enterprise since our ThinkPad T60p Linux announcement, and today's announcement expands upon our efforts by offering customers more Linux options," said Lenovo VP Sam Dusi in a statement.… Read more

Lenovo thinks Linux

Lenovo will offer a version of Linux on its ThinkPad notebooks beginning in the fourth quarter, the company announced Monday.

The Chinese PC maker has selected Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 from Novell as its first supported entry into the world of open source. Though ThinkPads have been certified to run Linux in the past, this is the first time Lenovo will support the hardware and operating system directly. Novell will be responsible for providing operating system updates to Lenovo's customers. ThinkPads with Suse Linux will be available to Lenovo's commercial customers and individuals.

Lenovo's Olympic desktop doesn't medal

If Lenovo's limited-edition Olympics desktop were in the games themselves, it probably wouldn't be too happy with its scores. Unlike the decidedly un-computer-like design of its special laptop--which carries the "Cloud of Promise" motif created for the 2008 torch in Beijing--the desktop PC is breathtakingly boring.

In fact, were it not for a barely perceptible Olympics logo and a "unique and stylish black and silver exterior" (cough), it would be difficult to tell the commemorative computer apart from a standard desktop in Lenovo's 3000 series, as well as its relatively modest specs. … Read more

Two notebooks approved for Wireless USB

It's taken long enough, but they're here: the first computers that can make USB connections sans cables.

Dell's Inspiron 1720 notebook and Lenovo's ThinkPad T61 and T61p models are the first PCs to receive certification for the standard, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) is expected to announce Monday. Texas-based WiQuest Communications makes the Wireless USB chipset in both notebooks.

Olympics laptop goes for a trial heat

Considering how quickly Lenovo's Olympics laptop came out--it was shown just one day after its first public mention--the company has taken a fairly long time to release any details.

But Electronista says the "Xiang" notebook, which bears the distinctive "Cloud of Promise" design created specifically for the 2008 Beijing Games, has made an appearance at a Southeast Asian trade show and sported a 12-inch widescreen, a 1.66 GHz Core Duo processor, a multi-card reader and three USB ports, among other features.

Lenovo touts energy efficiency, UWB power notebook

Lenovo plans to announce Tuesday that all of its X-, T- and R-series computers with Santa Rosa platforms will qualify for the Energy Star 4.0 rating that goes into effect on July 20.

The Energy Star program, which is overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, revised its voluntary set of energy efficiency standards for computers for the first time in over a decade. Among the standards required to garner an Energy Star 4.0 sticker is a decreased power consumption while a computer is idle.
