T-Mobile: Bring us your unlocked AT&T iPhones

T-Mobile now has a new pool of potential customers to fish in, thanks to AT&T's recent resolution to unlock your device for you, after meeting the right requirements.

It's a position they intend to capitalize on, too. The nation's fourth-largest carrier has GSM micro-SIM cards on hand for compatible phones, including the iPhone. Buying one of these micro-SIMs and signing up your unlocked iPhone for a T-Mobile Value plan is all it takes to get started as a T-Mobile customer on the iPhone.

Although T-Mobile doesn't sell any version of Apple's smartphones, a spokesperson told 9to5Mac that there are "more than 1 million unlocked iPhones running on our network."

This isn't the right solution for speed-demons, however. Customers on unlocked iPhones will ride T-Mobile's 2G speeds.… Read more

File locked? Access denied? Use IOBit Unlocker

It's annoying to try to delete a file or folder, only to be told you can't because it's locked, usually because it's already open in another application. Most of the time, simply closing stuff and trying again does the job. We tried IOBit's Unlocker, a free utility that unlocks files and folders so that you can delete or modify them.

German court pushes Apple's slide-to-unlock lawsuit back

Apple and Samsung are locked in a slide-to-unlock dispute in a Mannheim court, but neither side should expect a decision anytime soon.

Mannheim regional judge Andreas Voss today said that the court would wait until the German Patent and Trademark Office hears Apple's case before it continues. According to FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller, which first reported on the news, the patent office proceeding could lead to "the revocation, in whole or in part, of Apple's slide-to-unlock utility model."

As Mueller points out, Apple is staking its claims against Samsung on that utility model, which is not … Read more

Google files for slide-to-unlock patent as Apple battle heats up

Who would have thought a simple slide-to-unlock gesture would be so important?

Google last week saw a patent it filed for back in 2010 published that describes a manner in which users interact with a smartphone--or PC--to unlock the device and perform at least one command. According to the patent filing, the commands can be anything from placing a phone call to opening an application.

The publication is a key step in Google acquiring the patent, since it establishes full prior art for any other patent applications that might pop up worldwide.

Unlike typical unlocking mechanisms, which bring users back … Read more
