Recover deleted files

How many times have you deleted a file, emptied the Recycle Bin, and then had that sinking feeling in your gut. You need one of those files. Or maybe you just had a hard-disk crash, and suddenly all the files have disappeared.

I'll tell you how to recover your files, and show you how to do it, in this video.

For this example, I'm going to use a USB drive. But the same thing applies to most data drives. If your disk is still readable by the computer, you can recover all kinds of cool stuff.

Another house ransacked from Craigslist ad

Most folks recall the story about the Tacoma, Wash., house that was trashed after a woman posted an ad on Craigslist telling people to "please help yourself to anything on the property."

Well, some mischief maker in Jacksonville, Ore., apparently decided to re-enact the Tacoma house-trashing scheme. According to this Associated Press story, Robert Salisbury came home to nearly 30 people rummaging through his barn and front porch. Not only that, when he told the trespassers to give him back his belongings, he was rebuffed.

"I informed them I was the owner, but they refused to give … Read more

Jawbone designer talks some trash

There's a good reason that Yves Behar was once crowned "The Brand Wizard": It's true. The Swiss-born designer has proven himself something of a Renaissance man in his profession, finding success in fields as diverse as sports and interior decor, as well as his work on the OLPC XO laptop.

But his name became much more familiar in consumer electronics with his avant-garde design of the popular "Aliph Jawbone" headset, so one can't really fault him for going back to that well for a limited edition. The special models are perhaps most noticeably … Read more

Stink-free compost right in the kitchen

The quest to make kitchens around the country more eco-friendly just got a little easier. NatureMill, a San Francisco-based company founded by an MIT grad in 2004, is adding to its lineup of indoor automatic composters.

NatureMill's composters speed up the process of composting by heating, mixing, and aerating the waste that gets put into it. After two weeks, fresh food waste can be turned into nutrient-rich fertilizer for the garden, according to the company. They're small enough to fit into a regular kitchen cabinet (20 inches long by 12 inches wide by 20 inches high), and to … Read more

Press Releases We (almost) Never Finished Reading Dept: Use technology to make a shopping list!

"Ikan is a revolutionary new way of shopping for groceries that will change your life!"

Oh, man, not again. Didn't this pitch die in 1950's newsreels?

But wait, is there maybe more here? Ikan is a scanner you put near the trash in your kitchen. As you throw stuff out, you scan its bar code. Then the service makes a list that it can auto-transmit to the grocery store. Very 1950, no?

People are going to keep banging their heads against the grocery business. But it's a very tough market (sorry). Margins are so incredibly … Read more

Suspect named in Tacoma house-trashing incident

We all remember the story of the giveaway house in Tacoma. Somebody posted an ad on the Seattle area Craigslist inviting folks to take away whatever they could find inside an otherwise unremarkable home. The response was eager and effective. Woodwork and fixtures vanished out the door. What was left was trashed. The incident aroused much online interest.

There was some police interest as well. Tacoma police told CNET News.com there would be criminal charges filed. And now the accused hoaxer, the person who invited the world to trash, has been charged.

Police have accused Nichole M. Blackwell, 28, … Read more

Update: This week in self-opening trash cans

Most would agree that trash is smelly, no fun to look at, and tastes funny. This is why garbage cans with lids were invented.

Lidded cans solved the problem of not having to look at or smell trash, but the risk of brushing one's hand up against dirty trash-can flaps still existed for some time. This led to the discovery of foot-pedal-operated trash cans.

And now, in this age of cell phones and 60-plus-inch HDTVs, comes the dawn of self-opening trash cans. Options abound, just as long as you're willing to drop a couple hundred dollars on something … Read more

Where BMW and trash bins intersect

It's one of our least favorite weekly rituals: Carting the recycling crates to the curb, with cans falling off and paper blowing down the street. We could use one of those built-in trash compactors, but we've never been the same since reading about some guy who got his head stuck in one. (Story for another time.)

But this is different, and we want one. The Ecopod automated recycling bin is like a cross between a trash compactor and a BMW. (In fact, according to Treehugger, it was created with the help of DesignworksUSA, which designed the BMW X5.) … Read more
