Cookie headset: Do we smell the future of sweets?

We are now messing with things that mankind has no business messing with: confectionary treats.

"Meta Cookie" is an "interactive gustatory display" by Takuji Narumi of the University of Tokyo meant to test how computers can manipulate the way people perceive taste.

The mad scientist has created a helmet with goggles that connect to a camera. Wearing the headgear, the subject sees video images of a variety of cookie types and chooses the one that appeals.

Once a cookie flavor is selected, the goggles use augmented reality to make a plain old cookie look like the … Read more

Report: In IE8, Web ads won out over privacy

Efforts to build Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 with more robust privacy settings were reportedly stifled by the needs of online advertisers to track user activity, according to a story in Monday's Wall Street Journal.

In designing the browser in early 2008, IE8's development team, led by manager Dean Hachamovitch, wanted to implement new privacy features that would limit third parties from easily tracking mouse clicks and other user activity, according to the Journal. The effort was seen as an attempt to distinguish Internet Explorer from up-and-coming rivals like Firefox, which had gradually been grabbing more of IE'… Read more

Put Yoda in your cookie jar

Yoda, Boba Fett, Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper can grace your cookie jar, provided you have the Star Wars Cookie Cutters. While these four figures might not have been my first choices as far as Star Wars characters I'd like to nibble on, this set of four does make for some great treats. Each cookie cutter measures between 2.5 inches and 4 inches wide. They're available through Williams-Sonoma.

The Star Wars Cookie Cutters don't just cut an outline in your cookie dough: the edges of the cutters create the shape of the dough but you then … Read more

Tracking Web users without using cookies

If you're interested in protecting your online privacy, you've probably taken steps like deleting browser cookies or turning on the private browsing features of Safari and Google Chrome.

That's supposed to prevent Web sites from tracking you across repeat visits. But a forthcoming paper prepared by an Electronic Frontier Foundation technologist shows that they're not really effective at all.

The reason is simple, but counterintuitive: Modern browsers have been designed to send Web sites a torrent of information thought to be innocuous, including detailed version numbers, operating system information, screen size, what fonts are installed, and … Read more

Caught with a hand in the cookie jar?

When I was little, I'd spend hours plotting how to get my hands into the cookie jar. I didn't always manage it, but more often that not, the result would be that my grandmother would notice the jar was empty and tell me I had to help her make more. I didn't mind, of course. I don't think I would have minded getting caught with my hand in the Cookie Cutters-in-a-Jar, either. This cookie jar comes filled with a set of twelve different cookie cutters: a leaf, an apple, a car, an ice cream cone, a … Read more

Your favorite cookies on a stick

Lately, I've been seeing lots of cool cookies at bake sales and other functions: they're baked with lollipop sticks in them so kids can take them on the go and they're decorated with with great frosting. I may not be able to mimic the careful details that go into decorating these cookies, but I have figured out an easy way to turn my cookies into lollipops. The Lollipop Cookie Pan, from G&S Design, lets you turn out eight lollipop cookies at a go, shaped like daisies, tulips and butterflies. Even better, the cookie designs look … Read more

Concerns about losing website settings when resetting Safari

If you've run into odd behavior with Safari, one convenient way to empty caches and otherwise clear temporary data is to use the "Reset Safari" option in the "Safari" application menu. Despite the convenience of this feature, some people may wonder what will happen for each option, and what might happen to personal data.… Read more
