YouTube mobile now available for everyone

YouTube's mobile site has been live and available as of a few days ago. The service offers a hand-picked selection of videos users can watch on their mobile devices. Users have access to just the bare essentials, such as running time, rating, and a link to a video's page with more details. There is, however, no community aspect--no user comments, ratings, or video responses--the kind of things that make YouTube so interesting. Also missing is a dedicated video uploader, as mobile users are still required to submit their mobile videos via MMS messaging.

MySpace, Sony debut ADD-friendly 'Minisode Network'

We know you've been waiting for the moment when you could watch condensed episodes of The Partridge Family online. As expected, MySpace Video and Sony Pictures Television have collaborated on the "Minisode Network," a broadband video page featuring shortened versions of various Sony television shows available in a free, ad-supported form (the current sponsor is Honda) and which launched on Tuesday. MySpace members also have the option to embed 'minisodes' in their profiles.

You can think of it as TV on Cliff's Notes. Each 'minisode' is three to five minutes long, but Sony and MySpace have … Read more

Cosmic Wii story wins film festival

If you had a hankering to win a contest to make the best short Nintendo-themed film, you're disappointed Tuesday. Unless your name is Jack Paccione, that is.

Paccione's film, Good vs. Wiivil, in which the successful video game console is placed in the middle of a cosmic struggle between right and wrong, won the first-ever Nintendo Short Cuts Showcase film festival. He beat out nine other entrants.

Nintendo was clearly happy about the more than 200 content entries given that each of these works celebrated the company and its work.

"It reinforced our innovation and our own … Read more

Yahoo Video

Category: Media

Yahoo Video is Yahoo's answer to YouTube and other similar video-hosting services. Users can search and watch a variety of clips, along with some commercial content from partners. They also can upload their own content and give it tags to help others sort through it. Users don't need to install anything special on their computers to play the videos, only a browser plug-in.

Similar to other modern day video services, any video on Yahoo Video can be embedded elsewhere on blogs, Web sites, and social-networking profiles. When users get to the end of a clip, they … Read more

Microsoft, I want my multiroom DVR

Microsoft said Monday that's it's revamped its IPTV software, now called MediaRoom. In a feature published Monday on CNET News.com, I've already gone into some depth about what the new software offers and what it means for the telco TV market.

But I also wanted to point out an important feature the new software doesn't offer: multiroom DVR. This service would be a dream come true for me. Even though I've got three TVs in my tiny apartment in New York City, my roommate and I still fight over the TV in the living … Read more

Wii Controls Gaming Market: Surprise of the Year?

At this very moment, I am looking at a paused Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game while an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are perched alongside the Wii collecting dust. Does that mean the 360 and Playstation 3 are inferior to the Wii or provide a less gratifying experience? No way. But what it does mean is that Sony and Microsoft underestimated Nintendo as well as the consumer base they try so hard to impress. The Wii's success may not have been a surprise to Nintendo fanboys out there, but it becomes more apparent that the Wii's success … Read more

Blogger launches sneak peek of new service

Yesterday Blogger launched a new service called Blogger in Draft. It's essentially the same old Blogger interface with a few new features the team is in the midst of developing. Think of it like an open beta test. The first new feature is a built-in video uploader tool. Users can add AVI, MPEG, Quicktime, Windows Media, and Real video files with sizes up to 100MB. The service will then convert it into a playable Web video with an interface identical to Google's own video player, complete with Blogger branding.

What's interesting about this new feature is that … Read more

YouTube is testing a new interface

YouTube has started testing a new beta interface on their site. This opt-in test lets users get a sneak peek at what YouTube's designers have been working on.

The new design features easier access to more films by the user that you are currently watching, as well as separate sections for Related Videos and Promoted Videos. According to Nathan Weinberg from InsideGoogle, the actual size of the video has also been upped to 480x395. The look and feel of the links below the video has also been improved and includes new, larger icons. The coolest improvement in this new … Read more
