LinkedIn unveils new search platform

Updated at 7:15 p.m. PST to correct number of LinkedIn members.

Nearly a month after unveiling a new developer platform, business social-networking site LinkedIn took the wraps off a new search platform Monday night.

In a summary of the new key features, Esteban Kozak, senior product manager at LinkedIn, said the new platform is "redefining the way professionals go about finding talent, business partners, customers, or a former colleague."

The site, which has about 31 million members, examined more than a billion search queries executed by members to create new productivity tools, Kozak says.

Neuros Link: Watch what's on your PC on your TV

With so many broadcast networks making their content available via the Internet, you may find yourself catching up with shows on your PC more often than on your television. But now there's a product that lets you stream that same PC content directly to your TV.

The Neuros Link gives your TV access to sites such as CBS (Disclaimer: CBS is CNET's parent company), Hulu, CNN.com, FanCast, NBC.com, and YouTube. All those channels can be accessed by The Neuros Link via Neuros TV, a free service that lets you organize and watch Internet video on your … Read more

Slacker, Howcast added to Sony Bravia Internet Link channel line-up

Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link (or "BIVL," as we call it around here) is getting two more content partners: Slacker and Howcast. Slacker is the online streaming music service (similar to Pandora and Last.FM), while Howcast is a help and how-to Web site. Both will be available for free on the Sony IPTV accessory, which streams digital audio and video to compatible Bravia TVs. They join free channels available from YouTube, Wired, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo, and CBS (CNET's parent company), among others content partners.

Unfortunately, we gave Bravia Internet Video Link low marks when we … Read more

LinkedIn with apps makes social networking actually useful

Based on a nudge from Luke Kanies, I installed the TripIt application for LinkedIn. Others have been prodding me to use TripIt for at least a year, but this is the first time it made sense.

In one view, I could see my network activity, but right next to it is an upcoming trip to New York and people that I might want to reach out to while there, like my cousin.

What a perfect complement.

This is what Dopplr should have been, but it requires me to recreate my schedule (and network) just for it. I tried it for … Read more

LinkedIn cuts 10 percent of its workforce

Business-focused social-networking site LinkedIn announced Wednesday that it is cutting 10 percent of its workforce, or about 36 jobs, as part of a restructuring to focus on its revenue-producing businesses.

Company representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The layoffs follow LinkedIn's announcement last month that it had raised an additional $22.7 million in funding from Goldman Sachs, SAP, McGraw-Hill, and longtime investor Bessemer Venture Partners. That round followed a $53 million series D funding round in June that gave LinkedIn a valuation of $1 billion. The latest round of funding brings the total funds raised … Read more

Western Digital does its version of Apple TV

Western Digital has entered the media player fray with its $129.99 WD TV Media Player. The player, which reads a variety of audio, photo, and video files, is designed to be paired with a portable hard drive that's loaded with media files. Naturally, Western Digital would prefer if you purchased one of its My Passport drives, but you can connect any USB mass storage device to the WD TV Media Player.

The little black box comes with a remote and connects to your TV via HDMI or standard composite AV cables. The release says: "Users leave the … Read more

YouTube deep video links go live

On Thursday, YouTube introduced a new feature that enables users to send a link to a video that will start at the precise time they've selected.

Similar standalone Web services have offered workarounds for such a feature, however YouTube has gone above and beyond by integrating this into the comments section of each video. Anytime a user writes in a time in their comment, YouTube's system will parse it over and create one of these deep links. For example if you say "The explosion in 2:10 blew my mind" the 2:10 becomes a link … Read more

Spb to power mobile online services

Starting with mobile online games, Spb Software, a popular vendor for Windows mobile apps, is rolling out a set of premium online services for 3G networks. And Russian mobile users will be getting the first crack.

The package, called SkyTouch, is basically a customized Spb Mobile user interface that gives consumers access to local online services over cellular data connections, such as streaming music or TV. This is the first time that Spb Online is implemented by a mobile service provider, which in this case is SkyLink, Russia's largest CDMA mobile operator.

SkyTouch will be available preinstalled on SkyLink'… Read more

LinkedIn's well-groomed app platform goes live

There's nary a sheep to be tossed on business network LinkedIn's new developer platform, which has officially gone live.

The array of internal- and partner-created applications includes a "reading list" app from Amazon, a trip-tracking app from TripIt, file sharing from Box.net, and presentation apps from SlideShare and Google Presentation.

"One of the big differences between LinkedIn and some of the other platforms is that we're being very selective about the apps that are integrated onto our platform," LinkedIn vice president of platform Jamie Templeton told CNET News. Developers and companies must … Read more
