MobileMe gets updated, improved, and 'pushy' once more

Apple distributed an e-mail recently to MobileMe subscribers that detailed some improved features, but the biggest news from that e-mail was the fact that push is back.

Push was part of the initially tragic launch of MobileMe in 2008--a launch so poorly implemented that the word "push" was removed from descriptions of MobileMe until synchronization between computers and mobile devices (i.e. iPhone and iPod Touch) would perform at an acceptable level.

Now that push is in business again, syncing with Macs or PCs is faster. Any updates that you make to contacts or calendars on your Mac … Read more

19-inch monitors: Please try to quell your excitement

Are you as excited about 19-inch monitors as I am?! If you answered, "Yes! I'm SO excited I can't stand it!" then you may want to reevaluate your life priorities. If you answered, "Probably not," then you should hit me up for a drink sometime, as you sound like a normal person I could have a conversation with, without feeling like you're gonna flip out at any moment, pull a monitor from under the table, and smash me in the face.

What I'm trying to say is, smaller monitors just aren't … Read more

Google Intros 2-way Over-the-Air iPhone and iPod Touch Data Sync

Google has announed availability of a new version of Google Sync, which includes beta support for two-way sync support for the iPod touch and iPhone. Users of either of these devices can send their calendar and contact updates to their Google account and have these changes distributed to all the devices syncing with that account. They can also, in turn, make changes in their Google account, and these changes will be pushed out to the mobile devices.

This syncing feature works because Google has licensed Microsoft's Exchange ActiveSync protocol to push the information fairly quickly, usually within minutes, to … Read more

Google Sync pushes contacts, calendars to phones

On Monday mobile phone users, including those with Apple's iPhone, got a new way to sync and access information from the cloud. Called Google Sync, the new service lets you sync up both calendars and contacts from a specified Google account and will send changes over the air--both ways.

The service uses Microsoft Exchange's ActiveSync protocol to get the job done, and because of this can actively push changes as soon as they're made. Previously the only way to get this kind of near-instantaneous change was to sync up an existing Exchange account with Outlook using Google'… Read more

Buzz Out Loud 907: Sealed mummies (eat as is)

Once again we find something that Natali can't cook: mummies. But she does suggest they be used as jerky. Don't worry, we also have lots of thoughts about the Kindle 2 and Psystar's suit against Apple. Plus, somebody owns the name Netbook. Is that allowed?

Microsoft, Google in rare technology pact

Microsoft has licensed its technical know-how to nearly every company, including rivals such as Apple and Nokia.

Now Redmond can add Google to the list. To help power the Google Sync product that was announced on Monday, the search giant has licensed Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol for sharing information between a server and mobile phone.

Google Sync allows users to synchronize their contacts, and in some cases calendar information, with Google's Web-based services. It works with a range of phones including Windows Mobile phones, Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry, and phones from Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

Generally, companies … Read more
