Crippled Xbox 360s covered by Microsoft warranty

First, there was the Red Ring of Death (RRoD) epidemic. It struck thousands of early Xbox 360s and led Microsoft to announce in 2007 that it would repair all afflicted consoles free of charge and offer an extended three-year warranty on those machines.

The latest XBox 360 bug? The "E74 error," which has become enough of problem that Microsoft has had to announce that it will repair all consoles affected by it--and extend its three-year warranty to cover any potential E74 problems.

Like the Red Ring of Death, it's not hard to figure out whether you have … Read more

Good scan, no cleaning

Although its scans are effective, this bug cleaner is a real let down. Any problems found will have to be removed manually or with another program.

PC Bug Cleaner has a simple, functional interface that's easy for anyone to understand. Three action tabs offer all the options you'll need. The scan tab lets users choose which sections of the Registry to check for errors. A quick visit to the "select all" button is the easiest and safest option. Although it's not as fast as other scanners, this program is effective in its search. Users are … Read more

Tweaker for system errors

Optimizing a system is sometimes just a matter of housecleaning: fixing what you can, getting rid of what you don't need, and generally tidying up. This user-friendly app works quickly to perform those chores on your computer, although the repair capabilities are limited in the demo version.

Error Nuker launches an attractively designed, easy-to-understand interface with five large tabs on its left side and a list of options or tasks in the large contextual pane that makes up most of its bulk. Determining how to use this utility is a simple matter, thanks to its design. Its engine analyzes … Read more

Facebook users targeted by rogue application

A new piece of malware making the rounds on Facebook falsely warns users that their friends have had problems viewing their profiles, posing a potential threat to users' personal information.

The rogue application, dubbed "Error Check System," displays an error message in the notifications section that reads "(Friend's name) has faced some errors when checking your profile View The Errors Message."

But the warnings are fake and a viral attempt to spread the application and recruit more Facebook users, according to Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant with Sophos. While saying that there is no … Read more

Microsoft wants refund from some laid-off workers

Editor's note: Since this story was published, Microsoft has reversed its decision. You can read an updated story on its decision here.

Microsoft says it made an accounting error when it laid off some employees last month and now feels the best way to correct the error is with what will likely add up to a public relations blunder.

The software giant, which recently laid off 1,400 employees, sent letters (see image below) this week to some of those former workers letting them know that their severance payouts were a bit too "generous" and respectfully requested … Read more

5 unreported Google errors

After the somewhat strange occurrence of Google suggesting that the entire Internet was diseased (and after CNET's Natalie Weinstein revealing that the company initially placed the blame on a nonprofit organization out of Harvard University), I have delved deep to discover whether there might be other instances of Google error--you know, the sort that might not have seen the light of a million laptops.

This was hard work. But not as hard as one might have thought. There are more than one might have imagined. Here are the Top Five:

1. The Bernie Madoff Scandal. Mr. Madoff, the disgraced … Read more

Top 25 'most dangerous' coding errors revealed

Security experts from U.S. government agencies, multinational companies, and academia have released a list of what they consider to be the 25 most critical errors made while coding software.

Participants from more than 30 organizations worked together to agree on the 25 "most dangerous" errors, the SANS Institute said in a statement on Monday. They included experts from the U.S. National Security Agency, the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (US-Cert), Mitre, and the Sans Institute, as well as from Microsoft, Apple, and Oracle.

The list was released so programmers can check their code for the … Read more

iPhone SMS Messaging Error: "Requires 10-digit number"

Recently we reported on errors iPhone users receive when attempting to send SMS messages. Users experiencing this problem might also receive errors claiming the number used is invalid, and asks for a new number.

This problem has affected users off and on for some time, and seems to be a result of an improperly formatted number synchronized to the phone. When users synchronize their phones from various computers, if their personal contact vCard includes only a 7-digit number then it will sync to the phone and cause this problem. As such, users should be sure to enter a full 10-digit … Read more

Bloomberg mistakenly publishes Steve Jobs obituary

An electronic gaffe at news outlet Bloomberg mistakenly sent an incomplete obituary for Apple CEO Steve Jobs over the wire on Wednesday afternoon, and a tipster promptly sent the soon-retracted file to gossip blog Gawker.

The lengthy file contains not only a preliminary obituary for the iconic Apple chief, but also a list of suggested contacts for a more extensive story--Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and early Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki, among others.

The summary of Jobs' accomplishments, per the obituary, is that he "helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the … Read more

Google's calculator muffs some math problems

Updated at 7 p.m. PDT with Google comment.

Google's calculator has some trouble handling math with some large numbers, an issue that's not unheard of in computing circles but that might not sit well at a supremely nerdy company that's named after a humongous number.

The errors appear, though not consistently, with some very large numbers. For example, 2,999,999,999,999,999 minus 2,999,999,999,999,998 should be 1, but Google calculator shows it as 0.

It's not a simple case of a cutoff where things fall apart, though. 1,999,999,999,999,999 minus 1,999,999,999,999,995Read more
