Denon goes after Bose with the AH-NC732 noise-canceling headphones

Denon entered the headphone game just last year, but for a freshman competitor, the company had a lot to offer. Most of the models we auditioned--both full-size home headphones and travel-friendly in-ear models--ranged from good to excellent. Now the company is expanding its offerings with a noise-canceling model. The AH-NC732 On-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones offer a lightweight (160 grams), acoustic optimizer (said to offer deep bass), and compact hard case. A single AAA battery is needed for the active noise cancellation, which counteracts ambient noise with an inverse soundwave. In other words, the new Denons look to be targeted … Read more

A slew of new AV receivers from Denon

Denon has announced several new AV receivers for 2008, ranging from $1,200 down to $300. While last year's line of AV receivers marked a huge break from previous generations--with a colorful graphical user interfaces and curvy exterior design--the 2008 line looks to mostly continue the innovations from last year. The initial announcement lacked most of the important specifics we'd like to know about these receivers, but we have a broad idea of what they will offer.

All receivers will feature Audyssey Dynamic Volume, which is a sound processing mode that aims to keep volume at a stable … Read more

Denon's cheaper Blu-ray player is still expensive

The biggest knock against Blu-ray from the beginning has been price, but that hasn't stopped manufacturers from releasing new, expensive Blu-ray players. Although Denon's new Blu-ray player, the DVD-1800BD, is the least-expensive model in the company's line, its $750 price tag means only serious home theater enthusiasts will be giving it a look. The press release was light on details--there's not even a picture yet--but here's what we know so far:

Key features of the Denon DVD-1800BD:

Blu-ray Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) Can output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in bit stream format … Read more

Denon, Marantz, McIntosh, and Boston Acoustics are on the sales block

As reported in Bloomberg.com D & M Holdings Inc, makers of Denon, Marantz, McIntosh, Snell Acoustics, Boston Acoustics, and Escient, is on the sales block. I can't comment on the business aspects of the deal, but speaking as an audiophile I'm concerned. These companies are in the upper echelons of audio, the Marantz name goes back 50 years, McIntosh has been building some of the world's best electronics in Binghamton, New York for 60 years, I was a friend of Peter Snell, the founder of Snell Acoustics, and the D & M Holdings owned company still … Read more

Photos: Denon's $20,000 home theater system

If we hadn't just ruined it in the title, we could have made a snappy joke out of the Denon AVP/POA-A1HD. "What has two boxes, takes two people to lift and costs as much as a car?" But the AVP/POA-A1HD is no joke--it's Denon's outrageously high-end home theater system, and we really want one.

The A1HD comes in two exceptionally substantial components. The first is simply a pre-amp that costs 5,000 pounds, or about $10,025, and the second part is a a power-amp that goes for the same amount. The pre-amp … Read more

Ears-on with Denon's C551 earphones

There are three essential things that make certain mornings double-plus awesome: coffee, icanhascheezburger, and new earphones. Today, armed with a freshly brewed Americano, eight new lolcats and the brand-new Denon C551 'phones, we're happier than a midget at a People Who Look Like Gnomes convention.

The C551s are the very latest and greatest from Denon and we've been excited about them since first hearing of their release. We've been fans of the previous model from Denon, the C700s, and after getting our hands on a pair of the C551s we noted a number of similarities, but … Read more

Hard-Fi: the joys of turning it up to 11

Playing music and movies really loud is a lot of fun, too bad most of you are missing out on that part of the experience. Obviously, the speakers built into TVs aren't up to the job, and that's the way 80% of you experience TV. HTIB owners are likewise out of luck. Yeah, they may boast of having "1,000" watts on tap, but if you believe that, well, puhleeze! That 8 pound amplifier may, on a good day, squeeze out a few hundred watts.

If you really want to feel something when you're watching … Read more
