Reading the Windows 8 tea leaves

The Taiwanese tech confab Computex has revealed the first trickle of Windows 8 hardware, offering a little clarity to the muddy waters of the operating system's future.

Most of the Windows 8 devices on display were prototypes only. Few manufacturers released detailed specs, and fewer allowed attendees to even hold the prototypes. Nevertheless, there's some important things we can glean about how the new hardware will meld with the new operating system.

First, thin is in. Way in, and that bodes well for device weight. Even Asus' unusual and unique dual-screen Taichi is expected to come in at … Read more

The 404 1,068: Where it's a small world (podcast)

The time has come for every Internet denizen to take a stand against the worst atrocity (and probably the biggest problem) on the Web: vertical videos. Big thanks to the puppets in this PSA spreading the word about Vertical Video Syndrome.

You can blame Flip video cameras, the ubiquity of videos shot with an iPhone, or just the tech-ignorance masses, but it has to stop. With the help of Ariel, Richard, and Joseph on today's episode, we all hope to put an end to the vertical video travesty.… Read more

Meet In2uit's stylish portable electrostatic speakers

TAIPEI, Taiwan--The Filo speaker is a portable, battery-powered external speaker that weighs just 1.5 pounds. Instead of the usual magnets, the Filo uses electrostatic technology to create sound. We've seen such technology used in clothes for wearable speakers back at CES.

In2uit's approach differs by making its electrostatic speakers stylish and trendy. The unit has an internal battery that will last 10 hours on a full charge. You can play music by streaming it from your smartphone using Bluetooth, or through the 3.5mm audio jack. The Filo will be available in July in various countries for the cool price of $249. … Read more

Qualcomm reminds us that dual-core Windows Phone 8 is coming

Windows phones will finally be able to support more than one processor when the next version of Microsoft's mobile operating system hits, Qualcomm suggested Wednesday at Computex.

With Android phones already making the jump to quad-core it seems to be almost a throwback to the dawn of smartphones that Windows Phone 7 devices are still single core.

Generally, dual-core devices perform better than those with only one processor core -- as Microsoft and Intel know well in the Windows laptop world -- so it would be logical for Redmond to finally offer support for more processors in the Windows … Read more

Acer: Windows 8 devices not cheap, will rival pricey Apple

With all the Windows 8 hoopla at Computex, it's easy to forget that Microsoft's next operating system isn't a price panacea for consumers.

Acer Chairman JT Wang said Wednesday that the initial crop of Windows 8 devices will be pricey enough that they will be more suitable for "developed economies" like North America where "where purchasing power is strong," according to a report in Taipei-based DigiTimes.

And that means they'll have to be competitive with anything Apple has on the market in the September-October time frame when Windows 8 is projected for … Read more
