Most Saab 9-4Xs are headed for U.S.

LOS ANGELES--Saab expects 75 percent of 9-4X output to go to the United States. But even so, the number isn't large by industry standards.

The 9-4X is Saab's new crossover, developed with former owner General Motors Co.

9-4X output will average 12,500 units annually when full production is reached next year, said Jan Ake Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB. Jonsson said it is a conservative production forecast. About 9,400 are for the United States, he said.

"It is not that we don't believe in the car. We are trying to be responsible in … Read more

Is this the sexiest Cadillac ever?

Everywhere we went in the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe, we were met with turned heads and upturned thumbs. People couldn't get enough of looking at the angular coupe and, when the opportunity presented itself, asking us about it.

The CTS Coupe is a good-looking car with a profile that screams speed even when resting in a parking lot and neat touches such as handle-free doors that make this Caddy look more like a 2051 model than a 2011. We wouldn't turn down the extra performance if someone tossed us the keys to a rip-snorting CTS-V, but our tester'… Read more

One pricey wagon: The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon will start at $62,990

The wagon is back--in a big way.

General Motors is now taking orders for the CTS-V Wagon; a limited number of these beauties will be available later this year starting at $62,990.

The wagon, which debuted at the 2010 New York auto show in April, boasts a supercharged 6.2L V-8 with 556-horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds.

It comes standard with six-speed manual, or a six-speed automatic transmission. And it has other features such as Brembo brakes and 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires.

Auto thieves after Escalades' bling

Those chrome rims on your Escalade may be turning heads on the road, but they're also catching the attention of auto thieves. The Cadillac Escalade is once again at the top of the list of the most frequently stolen new vehicles, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute's (HDLI) recent findings. The Escalade has been at the top of the list for most of the decade too.

The problem isn't that the SUV is easy to steal--it's equipped with several antitheft features, such as Path III, an engine immobilizer technology that requires an encoded key to … Read more

Cadillac to get new flagship, compact car

The Cadillac XTS Platinum concept may have screamed "flagship" at this year's Detroit auto show. But Cadillac already is looking at a more luxurious car--authorized by the boss himself.

This year, General Motors CEO, Ed Whitacre, authorized the brand to create a big, rear-wheel-drive flagship vehicle. The project still lacks a firm target date, sources say.

Here's what to expect in Cadillac's 2011-13 model years.

ATS: Cadillac probably will launch its compact car in the 2013 or 2014 model year. The line, based on the new rear-wheel drive Alpha platform, will have a two-door coupe … Read more

GM plans 'green' air-conditioning refrigerant for selected 2013 models

GM is planning to keep drivers and passengers of 2013 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac cars cool with a sustainable air-conditioning refrigerant that lingers in the atmosphere for only days instead of years.

Honeywell has designed a new refrigerant, (HFO-1234yf), that lingers in the atmosphere for just 11 days and has a global warming potential (GWP) of only 4, a 99.7 percent improvement over current emissions.

On average, the refrigerant used in current GM models, R-134a, has an atmospheric life of more than 13 years and a GWP of more than 1,400.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe: This Cadillac really zigs

One sunny Tuesday morning we found ourselves gripping the wheel of a 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe, about to enter a blind turn on a narrow two lane road. Figuring 60 mph might be just a little hot for this corner, we hit the brakes, making the smart six speed automatic transmission decide a gear change down to second was in order.

As the tach needle swung around to brush the 7,000 rpm redline, the engine sounded off with a strained growl, sounding as if someone were putting a beehive through a bandsaw, not one of the best engine notes we've heard. The wheel felt lifeless as we turned into the corner, its power mechanism tuned more for comfort than track days. But the front end of the car pointed where we wanted, and our still considerable speed in the turn made the summer tires start to slide.

But the wide track of the car, 2 inches greater than that of the CTS sedan, and the grippy tires kept the CTS Coupe under control. Well, mostly under control. From behind the wheel we felt we had a tiger by the tail, the car on the verge of going over the side. The suspension stayed loose, letting it get a little unsettled. Although not the kind of precision handling supplied by a BMW, we enjoyed it.

Concept to production Based on the CTS sedan, the CTS Coupe uses a dramatic design. Cadillac did more than just strip the rear doors from the sedan. The CTS Coupe is 2 inches shorter in length and 2 inches shorter in height, yet has a 2 inch wider rear track. The back glass, nestled in the angular rear of the car, seems almost horizontal. With the Coupe's design, the rear pillars are particularly wide, which Cadillac says leads to greater rigidity than the sedan. … Read more

General Motors recalls 1.5 million vehicles

General Motors today announced its recalling 1.5 million 2007-2009 model cars, trucks, and crossovers to disable a heated washer fluid system module that could pose a fire risk. Because the feature will be disabled, GM will make a voluntary payment of $100 to the owner or lessee of each vehicle.

There are no known injuries or crashes related to the condition, according to a GM news release.

"While our analysis shows the number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind," … Read more

Cadillac gives its SRX turbo boost

Last year we tested Cadillac's SRX small SUV. As most of its cabin tech mirrors what's in the CTS sedan, we had high praise for the vehicle; however, we felt its direct injection 3-liter V-6 engine didn't give it enough power. This year, Cadillac is releasing its top trim vehicle in the SRX line with a turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 engine under the hood.

Despite the smaller displacement, the turbo SRX gets 35 more horsepower than the direct injection version has. Even though its fuel economy suffers from the turbo, it's not much. We also like … Read more

GM pays back government loans in full

General Motors today announced the company has made its final payment of $5.8 billion to the U.S. Treasury and Export Development Canada, paying back its government loans in full, ahead of schedule.

Company Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre made the announcement at GM's Fairfax, Kansas facility.

"GM is able to repay the taxpayers in full, with interest, ahead of schedule, because more customers are buying vehicles like the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse and Buick LaCrosse we build here in Fairfax," said Whitacre. "We are now building some of the best cars, trucks, and … Read more
