Apple gives developers iOS 5.0.1 to test battery fix

Apple has given developers a new version of iOS 5 to test that promises to squash bugs that affect battery life.

This afternoon the company seeded a beta of iOS 5.0.1, which represents the first revision to the software since its public release on October 12.

According to BGR, which spotted the update on Apple's developer site, the new software fixes a handful of bugs, and even brings new features to the iPad.

Apple issues update to address MacBook Pro black-screen bug

With the release of OS X Lion, a number of owners of the 15-inch MacBook Pro from mid-2010 found that their systems began showing regular black screens when performing some tasks like manipulating graphics and waking from sleep. We reported on this when it first became an issue and also when OS X 10.7.2 was released.

A short while ago Apple issued a knowledge base article mentioning that it was aware of the black-screen issue with the affected machines, and was working on a fix.

Ford unveils OpenXC, invites open-source applications

SAN FRANCISCO--Ford wants developers to create a broad array of connectivity applications that can be used in conjunction with its cars, and it launched its OpenXC platform Monday to promote that effort.

In an announcement at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference here, Ford and its partner Bug Labs unveiled OpenXC, a platform designed to allow third-party developers to create any number of open-source hardware or software products that will interact with Ford's Sync system.

Facebook paid $40,000 to bug hunters in three weeks

Facebook said today it has paid more than $40,000 to people who have uncovered bugs on its Web site in the first three weeks of its Bug Bounty program.

The company launched its bug bounty program at the end of last month as a way to compensate people who find and report bugs that might otherwise go unfixed or be exploited by malicious hackers. Bug hunters can make upwards of $500 per bug reported.

Facebook launches bug bounty program

Facebook is set to announce today a bug bounty program in which researchers will be paid for reporting security holes on the popular social-networking Web site.

Compensation, which starts at $500 and has no maximum set, will be paid only to researchers who follow Facebook's Responsible Disclosure Policy and agree not to go public with the vulnerability information until Facebook has fixed the problem.

"Typically, it's no longer than a day" to fix a bug, Facebook Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan told CNET in a conference call.

Firefox 5 update aims to fix Mac OS X bugs

Mozilla is preparing to patch a flaw affecting the Firefox 5 browser on Apple's Leopard and Lion OS X operating systems.

The bug within OS X 10.7 Lion causes Firefox to crash if it is using downloadable fonts. Mozilla "alerted Apple to the problem before the release of 10.7, but they did not fix the problem before 10.7 went to final release,", the company wrote in a blog post Friday.
