The Authors Guild has stuck to its word in promising to appeal a federal judge's decision to dismiss its copyright infringement lawsuit against Google Books. The trade association that represents book authors has filed an appeal to the Second Circuit court, according to Publishers Weekly.
This suit has dragged on for the last eight years. It involves the Authors Guild alleging that Google's scanning and digitizing of all or portions of books and publishing them on the Web in its Google Print Library Project constitutes a "massive" copyright infringement. These texts are searchable on Google Books … Read more
It's easy to mock book titles like "Boffing Bigfoot," "Taken by the Tentacle Monsters," and "Sex With My Husband's Anatomically Correct Robot," but there's a growing market for erotic fiction by amateur writers that involves something a bit more unusual than an oversexed pirate or kilted warrior.
If romance e-books with sexy Yeti, mermen, Cthulhu, and aliens fill your tablet or e-reader and send your heart racing, the increasingly popularity of books featuring non-human love interests will come as no surprise. However, many may have been introduced to so-called monster porn for the first time thanks to a recent Business Insider piece on e-book retailers cracking down on this literary genre that's gaining a wide following online. One of the titles in question, "Moan For Bigfoot" by Virginia Wade, has been downloaded more than 100,000 times.
As a lifelong geek and hard-core fan of horror and fantasy books, I totally get the appeal. Let's face it -- an affair with a rich sultan or a fascinating count probably isn't going to happen in real life, so why not read about a flirty fling with a centaur instead? … Read more
Chromebooks grabbed about one-fifth of sales in commercial laptop channels in a 12-month period, up from virtually nothing the year before, according to NPD Group. On the flip side, Windows device sales, with the exception of tablets, have been "tepid" this year.
The sales of Google Chrome OS-based laptops accounted for 21 percent of all notebook sales through commercial channels ("pre-configured notebooks sales") year to date through November 2013, the largest share increase across the various product segments, NPD said in a report this week.
If that isn't proof enough of Chromebooks' rise in popularity, … Read more
commentary Psst...Microsoft laptop partners are ahead of Apple on critical design metrics like weight.
So, how will that play out in 2014? A snapshot of today's lightest, edgiest designs should give us an idea (I'll put aside a discussion of competing operating systems and pricing for this post).
Weight: Like tablets, generally the thinner and lighter the laptop, the better. That's what the popular MacBook Air is all about and the reason the ultrabook was developed -- Wintel's (Microsoft-Intel's) response to the Air.
Enter the carbon fiber-based Sony Vaio Pro 11 and 13, which … Read more
In late July of this year, a problem with Apple's 2013 MacBook Air became apparent, where owners began experiencing intermittent black screens somewhat randomly when using their systems.
Since the initial reports of this problem, Apple has issued both general OS updates and upgrades with the release of Mavericks, as well as a specific graphics update for the 2013 MacBook Air; however, this problem has not yet been fixed and affected MacBook Airs continue to show random black screens.
The problem usually happens when systems are moved, bumped, or sometimes even slightly vibrated (such as might happen when typing … Read more
There's something wonderful about gifting someone with a book you read and loved, knowing they'll dive in to the same world you explored through text on a page.
These days, you're likely to find that friends are instead reading their books on an e-reader like the Nook, Kindle, or iPad, a transition that seemingly makes book-gifting a challenge. After all, you can't put a bow on an intangible file.
Gifting someone with an e-book is a lot easier than it seems, but will vary depending on which e-reading device he or she owns. Once you find … Read more
As the holiday shopping season comes down to its last week, Apple has added the ability to make gifts of e-books through its iBookstore.
Amazon -- Apple's chief competitor in the e-book market -- has for years allowed Kindle e-books to be gifted. And while Apple has long allowed other types of digital content to be gifted, such as apps and music, the option was unavailable to iBookstore users.
Remember when a Kindle was a big, bulky thing that cost $399, and you couldn't even get one? That was a scant six years ago. It's amazing the difference a few years can make.
To wit: In a move that will undoubtedly satisfy legions of near-last-minute gift shoppers, Amazon just served up the Kindle deal of the year.
Today only, and while supplies last, you can get the Kindle with Special Offers e-reader for $49 shipped. That's a $20 savings and the lowest price ever on a new Kindle direct from Amazon.
Make no mistake, this is … Read more
Originally, Google Books was only good at doing one thing: reading content from the Google Play Store. This meant you could read free books, or the ones you purchased -- and that was it. When the update allowing your personal files to be uploaded to Google Books came along, the app made a giant leap forward. Now Android devices could be even more competitive with traditional e-readers that allow side-loading.
Unfortunately, the upload feature was limited to your Web browser. This meant navigating to the Play Books Web site on a computer, or within the mobile browser, to upload your … Read more
