Let's do this thing

Well, the Macalope's faithful and well-groomed readers know that he doesn't suffer silly punditry lightly. And this may be only his second post over at his new digs (hey, did you check out the fussball table?!), but let's see if he's become a domesticated animal or if he still rolls the way he used to.

Before linking to the piece in question, let's take a look at a quote.

Apple excels in creative and innovative marketing. Often it's what they don't tell you that creates the most buzz. For example, we know next … Read more

Category: Browsing

Safari is Apple's Web browser. It's one of the more speedy browsers around, and it was one of the first Web browsers to introduce a built-in RSS reader. It's currently in its third iteration and recently went cross-platform--leaving its Mac-only status and adding the ability to work on Windows, too.

Safari began as an in-house replacement to Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which Microsoft didn't update or improve on at the same rate as as it did for its Windows counterpart--and eventually dropped shortly after the release of Safari.

Safari has recently gotten … Read more

iPhone apps: Try before you buy

You don't need an iPhone to try out iPhone apps. Since the application platform is just a browser, you can see right now how some of the apps that people are building will look on your phone.

We've covered Digg and OneTrip already, but to see even more iPhone apps all together on one page, check out iPhoneApplicationList. For best results you should use Safari, although I've also had good luck previewing iPhone apps in Firefox.

Since the apps are just Web pages, no doubt there will be many, many iPhone app directories springing up soon.

Yet another URL flaw for Safari 3.0 for Windows beta

Security researcher Robert Swiecki, who two days ago disclosed a URL vulnerability within the new Safari 3.0 for Windows beta, has another. The new flaw requires a user to visit a specially crafted Web page. There, an attacker can write whatever name in the URL toolbar and fill the client browser window with arbitrary content. He provides an example (link should be viewed within Safari).

In response to other Safari 3.0 vulnerabilities, Apple yesterday released an updated version that addresses three of the public vulnerabilities. Swiecki says he tested this latest vulnerability on Safari 3.0.1 (522.… Read more

Windows users download 1 million copies of Safari

Safari was an early hit with Windows users, who have downloaded 1 million copies of the browser since Monday, according to Apple.

CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the Windows version of the browser as a beta release Monday during his keynote speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Safari makes up around 5 percent of the browser market, trailing Internet Explorer and Firefox with its 18.6 million users, a figure Jobs used in his speech Monday.

Cynical colleagues at CNET wonder how many of those downloads were started by hackers and security professionals probing for weaknesses, which is probably a fair … Read more

Another flaw within Safari 3.0 for Windows beta

Security researcher Robert Swiecki disclosed yesterday another vulnerability within the new Safari 3.0 for Windows beta, bringing the total of public vulnerabilities to nine. The latest flaw allows an attacker to steal a cookie. The flaw exists in the Javascript's window.setTimeout()implementation where the content timer-triggered function is processed after window.location property is changed.

In response to other Safari 3.0 vulnerabilities, Apple today released an updated version that addresses three of the nine public vulnerabilities.

Apple updates Safari with version 3.0.1 for Windows (beta)

Stung by the harsh reception to Safari for Windows (beta), Apple today released Safari 3.0.1 for Windows (beta), addressing three flaws. The updated version patches CVE-2007-3186, a command-injection vulnerability that may lead to arbitrary code execution; CVE-2007-3185, an out-of-bounds memory read issue that may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution; and CVE-2007-2391, a race condition that may allow cross-site scripting. The patches are issued for Windows XP and Windows Vista users; these issues do not affect Mac OS X systems.

The latest version can be downloaded from Apple here.

Digg for the iPhone

What are iPhone applications going to look and feel like? We saw yesterday a simple shopping list application, and here's another one bound to be a big hit: Digg for the iPhone.

This "app," like others to come, is really just a Web site designed for the JavaScript in Safari, and for the iPhone's small screen. (It works in Firefox and IE, too). The interface employs the "fling" feature that Steve Jobs and the iPhone commercials show off: when you drag down a list with your fingertip (or mouse), and let go, it feels … Read more

First third-party iPhone app: A shopping list

It only runs on Safari--and no one but Apple knows if it'll actually run on the iPhone, because JavaScript support is still a mystery--but the first third-party application built with the iPhone in mind is freely available.

OneTrip, a simple JavaScript shopping list builder that runs only on Safari, was created by designer Neven Mrgan. You can download Safari here to test out the application.

According to Mrgan's Twitter page, the app existed as early as May 31. That's either tremendous foresight by Mrgan, amazing luck that Apple announced Safari as the official iPhone app engine yesterday at WWDC, … Read more

Will you use Safari?

For those of us interested in software, the lack of an iPhone developer's kit announcement at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference yesterday was a bit of a disappointment.

What we got instead was Safari for Windows, which is exactly what I don't need: another Web browser. When considered with the relaunch of Netscape Navigator last week, it's clear, however, that the battle for control of your browser is still a major front in the software wars.

Internet Explorer has reigned supreme since the dawn of the new century, while Mozilla Firefox continues to chip away at Microsoft'… Read more
