Research In Motion's official Inside BlackBerry blog has posted an explanation of the technology, and it turns out that the trackpad works much like the optical mouse you use with your desktop PC: it uses a low-resolution infrared camera to capture movement across the surface and translate it into direction.

Apple issues fix for MacBook trackpad woes

Apple has released a firmware update for new MacBook and MacBook Pro owners bedeviled by their glass trackpads.

The update is designed to fix an issue with the new trackpads unveiled by Apple in October, which replace the traditional trackpad/mouse button combination with a trackpad that also serves as the button. The first few owners of those systems, however, reported a persistent problem in which clicks on the trackpad would not register.

New MacBook trackpad not clicking for some users

The new glass trackpad introduced on the MacBooks unveiled by Apple last month appears to be giving some users fits.

The trackpad on the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros does away with a separate button, turning the whole trackpad into the mouse button. It also supports several new multitouch gestures for rotating pictures or scrolling. But The Register notes that some users are running into problems where the MacBook doesn't register clicks on the trackpad.

Rumor: A multitouch trackpad for MacBook Pro?

According to AppleInsider, the next version of MacBook Pro will be equipped with the same multitouch trackpad as the one on the MacBook Air.

Though this move is about as unexpected as the rising tide, it will be more interesting to see if their claims that the units will appear in a few weeks turns out to true. The new portables will also be based on Intel's latest Penryn processors.
