Lexar intros 16GB high-speed SD card

Lexar Media, a maker of digital storage cards, announced on Monday its 16GB version of the Kodak-branded Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) high-speed card.

The new card offers speeds up to 60x, which translate into about 9MB per second, allowing for capturing full-motion video without interruption. However, this speed is still not fast enough for dSLR cameras, whose photos can easily be as large as 9MB each, especially when you want to snap multiple photos at a time.

The new SD card works not only with Kodak cameras, but also any SDHC-compatible digital cameras, camcorders, and PDAs. It comes with a … Read more

Kingston Technology has notified us that it's shipping its 32GB Elite Pro SDHC Flash memory card, the largest capacity in Kingston's Elite Pro line of SDHC cards, which currently includes 4-, 8- and 16GB capacities. According to Kingston, its new fast 32GB card can "capture more than 6,000 still images with a 10MP camera and over eight hours of video (for 6Mbps HD Extended recording)."

The latest and greatest high-capacity cards don't come cheap and this one has a suggested retail price of $308, though we've seen it online for closer to $200. … Read more

Get an 8GB SD card for $29

I know memory cards are boring, but it just blows me away to see 8GB SD media selling for $29 when a few years ago you'd have paid hundreds for a card with half the capacity.

This is a Transcend Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card, meaning it should be compatible with all devices (smartphones, digital cameras, etc.) that meet the SD 2.0 standard. It includes a lifetime warranty, and best of all: no rebate. Alas, you'll pay about $9 for ground shipping, which is ridiculous given the size and weight of the product. But even at $… Read more

Panasonic offers big and fast SD card--for $700

Panasonic announced a new SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) flash card on Tuesday that offers both high speed and lots of space for those willing to pay.

The 32-gigabyte card, called the RP-SDV32GU1K, is due to ship in April for about $700. It's a high-speed "class 6" card that can transfer data at speeds of 20MB per second--the world's first at the 32GB capacity, Panasonic asserts.

SD is the dominant format for flash memory, and with the newer SDHC technology that extends capacity beyond 2GB, it's begun spreading into space-gobbling videocameras. SanDisk, a top flash card brand, announced a 32GB SDHC card costing $350 in January, … Read more

SanDisk takes SDHC memory card to 32GB

Correction 10:00 a.m. PST: This blog initially misstated the speed at which SanDisk's top-end Extreme Ducati cards can write data. It is 45MB/sec.

LAS VEGAS--SanDisk, one of the best known makers of flash memory cards, has started making the jump to 32GB capacity.

The company announced its 32GB Ultra II SDHC card Thursday at the Photo Marketing Association trade show here, a model designed with the needs of flash-based video cameras.

It will cost about $350 when it goes on sale in April, the company said. A $180 16GB Ultra II card will be available in … Read more

Canon's smart move to SD memory cards

Canon faced some modest compatibility risks when it chose to design its new EOS Rebel XSi camera with SD flash-memory cards rather than the CompactFlash cards it's used for all its SLR cameras until this point, but I think the move is smart overall.

It's a drag for consumers that there's such a profusion of flash card formats. Customers often must pay extra when moving from one camera maker to another just to replace flash cards. And indeed, owners of Canon's existing Rebel, Rebel XT, or XTi cameras will find their CompactFlash cards useless if they … Read more

Panasonic SW20 takes a soaking and keeps on shooting

Panasonic just revealed a new waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof compact camcorder at today's CES press conference. According to Panasonic, the new SW20 can handle dunks in up to 5 feet of water, drops from up to 4 feet, and will keep most dust out of its pint-size, colorful casing.

Though Panasonic has been producing its rugged Toughbooks for several years now, its camcorders have had this persistent quirk of breaking if you drop them several feet or submerge them in water. The SW20 is the first rugged, waterproof camcorder I've seen so far from Panasonic (last year's … Read more

Panasonic announces two new, compact AVCHD camcorders

Panasonic kicked off its CES digital imaging announcements with two new high-definition camcorders. Eschewing both tapes and DVDs, the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and HDC-SD9 record 1080/24p video directly to SD/SDHC cards.

According to Panasonic, the HDC-SD9 is the smallest, slightest 3CCD 1080/24p camcorder yet, weighing in at less than 0.7 pound. It writes AVCHD video to SD and SDHC cards, storing up to 6 hours of high-def footage to a 16 GB card. With the company's newly announced 32 GB SDHC card, the space doubles to up to 12 hours.

The 3CCD HDC-HS9 can also record … Read more

Lexar's UDMA CF/SD reader

Lexar is about to start shipping a new reader to complement its line of 300X Professional UDMA CompactFlash cards. First announced back in February, the reader features two slots: one UDMA-compatible CompactFlash slot and one SDHC-compatible SD card slot. The reader's slick design includes an integrated cover for the card slots. If you press buttons on the sides of the reader, the middle portion pops up and the slots become accessible. When you're done, just push the middle part down and the slots are covered, so you don't have to worry about dirt or dust getting inside … Read more

SanDisk heightens camera speed

How fast your camera shoots is due in part to the memory card it uses. Even the cleverest mechanical artistry is not enough if it's hampered by a sluggish write speed.

For that reason pro photographers would certainly appreciate the 8GB Extreme III SDHC, a drugged-up storage card for faster transfer speeds. Though the emphasis is on speed (read/write speed of 20MBps), there're some hardware and software extras. The bundled MicroMate is a USB 2.0 reader that can turn the card into a mass storage device or a card reader while the included RescuePRO software is … Read more
