This thick semi-throwback wasn't even mentioned by Apple, but it still exists. Like the cast in an Agatha Christie mystery, however, its ranks are being depleted. First the 17-inch version vanished back in 2011, and immediately after the October 2013 Apple press event, the 15-inch version disappeared from Apple's site, leaving only the $1,199 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro, which we are now referring to as … Read more
Is Microsoft confused? It is if you think hybrids are confusing.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook made a thinly disguised dig at Microsoft this week. Here's what he said (without mentioning Microsoft by name) at Apple's event this week in San Francisco. They're confused; they chased after netbooks. Now they're trying to make tablets into PCs and PCs into tablets. Who knows what they will do next...what I can tell you is that we have a very clear direction.
Invoking netbooks is a nice rhetorical trick as that conjures up crummy devices powered by bloated … Read more
For the first time, Apple is offering a 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro model with Intel-only graphics silicon. So what is Intel's best graphics chip yet, and how good is it?
That $1,999 MacBook Pro is powered by a quad-core Haswell Core i7 processor with Intel's Iris Pro 5200 graphics. (The high-end $2,599 MacBook Pro adds a standalone Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics processing unit to the 5200.)
Apple describes the 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro's Iris Pro as "128MB of embedded memory to accelerate processor- and graphics-intensive tasks by acting as an ultrafast … Read more
It should come as no surprise that the 0.7-inch-thick 15.4-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Pro Retina models aren't easy to repair. iFixit said this week their repairability is still rock bottom.
Thin laptops, especially those from Apple, aren't known for easy accessibility or repair as their cases are often completely sealed.
That hasn't changed with the 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.

A survey released by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, a Chicago-based research firm, notes that almost half, 46 percent, of iPad buyers in the United States nabbed one with Retina Display during the quarter that ended in September. That's up from 32 percent in the previous quarter. Not surprisingly, that bump in sales of iPads with the higher quality display came at the expense of the iPad 2.
If the trend continues, the amount of buyers opting for … Read more
It's time to start talking about the iPad 6.
Just kidding. While the iPad rumor mill stops to catch its breath for a second, I'll round up everything we got -- and maybe more importantly, what we didn't get -- at the Apple event on Tuesday.
Also this week, LG filed for some Chrome trademarks, which has me wondering whether we'll see a Chromebook from LG soon, and Microsoft could throw its hat into the smartglasses ring, which I wouldn't really mind.
Thanks for watching!
Editors' note: I mistakenly said that the "new iPad&… Read more
Best Buy will give customers a gift card for at least $200 for any working third or fourth generation iPad or iPad Mini that they trade in. Some customers may receive a higher trade-in value depending on the tablet's model and condition, the company said.
The offer, which lasts from October 22 to November 9, is valid at all Best Buy stores in the US.
The iPad for trade-in must power on to be considered working. Any tablets with cracked screens … Read more
"Today we're revolutionizing pricing," said Apple's senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi, right before announcing that the company would be giving away OS X Mavericks, Apple's new flagship Mac operating system. On the screen behind him, the word "Free" appeared from behind a glimmer of light, one of the hokey slide animations … Read more
Another prediction has come true: the iPad Mini got thicker and heavier.
While everyone is oohing and aahing over the display, they may not notice that the just-announced iPad Mini with Retina display is a little thicker than the original Mini.
The Mini Retina is 7.5mm (0.29-inches), while the original Mini is 7.2mm (0.28-inches).
And the Mini Retina gains 23 grams in weight over the over the original: 331 vs. 308.
Similar gains in grams apply to the Cellular (3G/4G) versions. The Mini Retina is 341 grams, while the original is 312 grams.

Previous rumors about limited supply of Apple's iPad Mini Retina seem to be coming true.
Apple's updated iPad Mini page states that the new Retina version of Apple's most popular iPad won't be available until "later in November" (see image at top).
But even when the $399 tablet (starting price) becomes available in November, the initial supply may be a relative trickle if demand goes through the roof.
"The supply for that product is severely constrained," said Rhoda Alexander, director of Tablet and Monitor Research at IHS iSuppli.
"We don't … Read more
