Amazon invites celebrities into its kitchen

Amazon.com announced on Monday a new celebrity chef section of its Web site. The Celebrity Chef Blog will feature recipes and tips from celebrities including Dinner Impossible's Robert Irvine, Helen Chen, and Mollie Katzen, as well as gift suggestions from a handful of Amazon's section editors.

The blogs will have places for reader comments, too, so if Irvine's recipe for oyster stuffing isn't all he said it would be, you can let him know about it.

It's not the first time Amazon has used original content to spice up its product offerings. It launched … Read more

Killer Download: Find holiday recipes using cooking database apps

With Thanksgiving only two days away, people are bringing out their favorite recipes for turkey, gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. How do you keep your recipes from year to year? My father's method was to put his favorite recipes into notebooks that would be brought out every year. But even with laminated pages, eventually his notebooks got pretty messy. My mother used index cards to store recipes, but over time the ingredients would fade, especially if the recipe was popular with the family.

In the search for a better method through software, I discovered some good recipe database programs anyone can use. These handy apps let you store all your favorite Thanksgiving recipes (along with all your other recipes) in a searchable database which you can quickly print out for easy access in the kitchen. You can also catalog things like spices and ingredients on hand, and then search for results using those and other parameters. Some of these apps let you explore other databases online with countless recipe variations and varieties of foods to choose from.… Read more

The Food Network's got an iPhone app

Lately I've been pretty enamored by the ajaxy bartending guide I spotted last week on Apple's iPhone apps directory, but for some serious foodie goodness the Food Network has taken it upon themselves to optimize part of their site for iPhone users.

This is pretty great for two reasons. The first being when you're out shopping and need some recipe ideas. This new app is chock full of some pretty decent ones from many of the Food Networks chefs including Alton Brown, Emeril, Bobby Flay, and the butter queen Paula Deen. The other bonus is when you'… Read more

Twitter feeds for eaters and cooks

By now you've probably heard of Twitter, the popular messaging service that lets members broadcast short messages to friends and followers. Twitter's subscription price (free) makes it a prime candidate for broadcasting more than just personal updates, and the past few months have brought two food-related Twitter feeds to our attention. The first, foodrecalls, rolls an RSS feed of FDA food recalls--along with links to complete recall details--to its followers. It's a useful way for Twitter members to stay up to date on possible dangers lurking in their refrigerators. The second, cookbook, provides basic recipes in fewer … Read more

AOL, Campbell partner on online recipes

AOL and the Campbell Soup Company have teamed up to make the food section of AOL's Web site a little more enticing. A new section, launched today, is called "Dinner Tonight" and features a quick and easy recipe for each night of the week. Users can tab through to see the suggested recipes for the whole week. AOL will include more than 2,000 Campbell's recipes in that section. But don't assume it's all going to be chicken baked in a can of cream of mushroom soup. Recipes for this week also come from … Read more

TasteBook kicks homemade recipe books up a notch

Kristina Nielsen has a growing collection of recipes, culled from friends, family members, magazines, books, Web sites and the occasional food package label. She keeps some of them in a binder and some loosely shoved in a drawer; some are neatly printed, some hastily scribbled on notes. Others live online in her recipe boxes on various sites. Together they represent the culmination of the 10 years she's spent learning how to cook new dishes. Now, a company called TasteBook wants to take Kristina's recipe collection--and those of amateur chefs like her--into the 21st century.

TasteBook, which plans to … Read more

Pirates in the kitchen: Recipe copying 'rampant' online

Editors' note: The report cited in this article originally misstated the name of one of the Web sites studied. The correct Web site is RachaelRayMag.com.

The next big copyright battle may be fought in the kitchen.

Content tracking company Attributor recently conducted a study to get an idea of how frequently online recipes are copied and reposted to other sites. What it found might concern some recipe publishers.

Attributor collected all the original recipes that appear on Epicurious.com, Allrecipes.com and RachaelRayMag.com. The software then checked those recipes against what was available elsewhere on the Web, looking … Read more

Epicurious gets a facelift

Conde Nast's Epicurious, the granddaddy of culinary Web sites, recently debuted a newly nipped-and-tucked design. The site's modular layout and increased emphasis on community have prompted more than one blogger to declare it "Epicurious 2.0." By making its content easier to find and adding more opportunity for members to interact, Epicurious has managed to stay one step ahead of other "old-media" sites, such as MyRecipes, Time Warner's recently launched foodie portal.

The new Epicurious home page includes more defined white space, larger images, and prominently placed links to community features, including a … Read more
