Music that'll make your speakers sound better

Great-sounding albums are becoming increasingly rare, so when I find noteworthy efforts I'm happy to share the news. The goal is highlighting new stuff--or at least newly recorded/remastered music--so there's no need to include Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" or Steely Dan's "Aja." I assume you're already hip to the best music from decades past; I'm trying to spread the word about the best new music over a range of styles, with something for every taste.

For more sonicly superior music, check out my "How to make your speakers sound better: Play better-sounding music&… Read more

The Beats Pro headphone, a better beat?

No one can deny that the original Beats by Dr. Dre was a revolutionary headphone design. It brought style and pizazz to the headphone market, and turned on a new generation of music lovers to the joys of great sound. The Beats Studio ($350) is still selling like gangbusters, but the Beats line has expanded to include something better, the Beats Pro ($450).

The Studio Beats have a lot of bass, but the Pros have more and distinctly tighter, more visceral bass. The two headphones sound very different; the Pros have a brighter, more forward balance, and the Studio Beats … Read more

Skype's VoIP calling is by now well known to most Mac users, and the ability to make computer-to-computer calls anywhere in the world for free is already extremely popular to international users. With Internet TV, cable wins even if it loses

Americans, little by little, are cutting the proverbial cord on cable television. But that doesn't mean they're breaking up with their cable companies.

In addition to controlling most of the paid TV market in the U.S., cable companies are also poised to dominate the broadband market. This means that even when people drop their pricey cable TV packages, they're still likely to pay the cable company for access to the Internet, which is used to deliver the video streams to their TVs. For cable operators, it's a "heads we win; tails we win" … Read more

Mouse over to view

DockView is a desktop customization app that lets you take a neat trick from Windows and mimic it in Snow Leopard: with DockView running, when you mouse over an app's icon in the Dock, you can instantly see live thumbnail images for all the windows open in that app.

You can accomplish something similar without DockView, by clicking and holding a Dock icon for a few seconds, but DockView gives you a much quicker and less intrusive view, while allowing you to quickly flip between different apps in the Dock. Plus, DockView's ability extends to the Mac OS … Read more

Make the Dock even better

HyperDock is a System Preferences pane (currently in free beta) that lets you add some time-saving functionality to your Dock that is similar to the Aero Peek feature found in recent versions of Windows.

With HyperDock installed, you can mouse over applications in the Dock and see thumbnail previews of all windows open in that app--which can make switching between different apps and windows faster and easier. You can accomplish a similar effect without using HyperDock (by just clicking and holding an app's Dock icon), but HyperDock shows you the preview much more quickly, and in thumbnail form, just … Read more

The 404 670: Where we mouse on over to OnMouseOver (podcast)

If you noticed strange black blocks covering text on the Twitter homepage, one of your friends likely fell victim to a new hack that exploits Twitter's Web interface. The exploit was discovered early this morning by security firm Sophos, which realized that if you put the JavaScript code "onmouseover" into a URL in a tweet, a user can make a pop-up window emerge just by hovering over the link.

"Mouseover" hacks aren't new, and CNET reporter Caroline McCarthy tells us they've been used within e-mails in the past, but the fire is out...for now. In the interim, we recommend you use third-party sources like TweetDeck--at least until Twitter beefs up its security.
