Nintendo has announced that it will finally be stocking its stripped down, $99 Wii Mini console on US store shelves later this month.
The Wii Mini, which debuted in Canada shortly after the official Wii U launch last fall, has seen launches in a number of other markets, most recently the UK in March. With Wii U sales tepid, only spiking recently thanks to a significant price cut, Nintendo has its eyes set on expansion.
Sales of Nintendo's Wii U have jumped a bit lately, but the device is still proving to be a thorn in the game company's side.
During the six-month period ended September 30, Nintendo generated revenue of 196.6 billion yen ($2.011 billion), down from 201 billion yen during the same period last year. The company was able to post a 600 million yen ($6.14 million) profit, however, which was far better than the 28 billion yen loss it posted in the prior year.
The data Nintendo revealed Wednesday also highlights a surprisingly fast fall from prominence. … Read more
The latest "Super Mario" or "Zelda" title may never end up on a smartphone or a tablet, but that doesn't mean Nintendo isn't thinking about ways to extend its presence to mobile devices.
"We're constantly thinking about how to leverage mobile as a marketing vehicle," Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime said on Tuesday during a meeting with CNET editors. "How do I give little tastes of content, little experiences that then drive the consumer back to my hardware environment?"
Despite the tease of bringing "experiences" to mobile devices, … Read more

Nintendo is bringing some new hues to its 3DS XL (or 3DS LL as it's known in Japan).
The company on Wednesday announced two new colors for the 3DS XL -- orange and turquoise. The Limited Edition models come with the same 3DS XL design but feature the new colors on the outside and on the buttons.

I'm feeling a little sad today. Nintendo on Monday officially consigned the Wii to the gaming console history bin, to join its brethren like the NES and Nintendo 64. The company is halting production to focus fully on the Wii's replacement, the Wii U. I understand that time and technology march onward, but I'm not quite ready to kiss my Wii goodbye.
I still remember hunting for my Wii. It was released in 2006 and the demand almost immediately caused shortages nearly on par with the great Cabbage Patch Doll scare of 1983. I trolled sites that tracked in-stock Wii consoles before finally lucking upon my own Wii from Sears in early 2007.… Read more
Game spending in the US was up considerably in September, thanks to the wildly popular Grand Theft Auto V.
Total game spending in the physical channel, which includes game discs, hardware, and accessories, hit $1.08 billion in the United States last month, research firm NPD reported Thursday. The spending was up 27 percent compared to September 2012, when consumers laid out $848 million in the US.
Grand Theft Auto V's record-breaking billion-dollar plus run last month made the video game industry's health a front and center topic, putting both the game's now-standard controversial content and the role of video games as an influential entertainment medium up for debate in media outlets small and large. And NPD Group's recent round of sales stats proves that even one title, albeit one that cost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to make, can jump-start an entire market.
But an interesting statistic found buried in NPD's report is more telling of how the industry'… Read more
