Backyard tinkerer Grant Thompson teaches us how to build a solar-powered death ray. A man gets a Netflix tattoo for life and only gets a measly one-year subscription for it. Plus, we meet Mr. Stubbs the alligator, the first reptile (that we know of, at least) to receive a prosthetic tail. Donation came from the Phoenix Herpetological Society and the Core Institute. … Read more

Convert videos for editing or broadcasting with MovieConverter Studio for Mac

When working with video files, experienced users often find switching between the multiple available formats difficult. MovieConverter Studio for Mac solves this problem through its conversion abilities, but with a moderate price tag.

Available as a free trial version, which limits the video output to three minutes, the program requires a $20 purchase to unlock the full version. After downloading, installation begins, but MovieConverter Studio for Mac needs an additional download of supplemental packages for certain format conversions. The menu for this download states these could not be packaged in the original file due to legal reasons, which is troublesome … Read more

Facebook apps can now broadcast your fitness, entertainment habits

Facebook is letting the third-party apps that track some of your lifestyle habits -- exercising, reading, and movie or TV-watching -- post more of your activities to the Timeline.

"We want people who use your apps to be excited about how their stories are presented in News Feed -- whether they're sharing a major life moment, like their first marathon, or something smaller, like finishing a book they were reading," Facebook engineer Dan Giambalvo wrote in a blog post to app developers.

This means if you use apps like Runkeeper, Goodreads, or Hulu, the apps can post … Read more

Here's something that will make the Motion Picture Association of America happy: movie sales and rentals increased after the feds shuttered cyberlocker MegaUpload last year.

A new study by Carnegie Mellon's Initiative for Digital Entertainment Analytics shows that after MegaUpload's closure online movie revenue increased by between 6 percent and 10 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal. The study researched two major movie studios and the results were measured in 12 different countries, including the U.S.

"We conclude that shutting down MegaUpload and Megavideo caused some customers to shift from cyberlocker-based piracy to purchasing … Read more

Russell Crowe claims to see UFO -- after no one sees his movie

Russell Crowe has seen the light.

It was burning in the sky outside his office in the Sydney district of Wooloomooloo.

There in the sky were visitors from an outer galaxy, beings even weirder than the ones he encounters in Hollywood.

So, as Australia's Daily Telegraph reported, Crowe secured pictures and then posted the time lapse edition to YouTube.

The Telegraph speculated that Crowe was concerned he wasn't enjoying enough publicity for his new movie.

Indeed, I wasn't aware that there was one.

On Twitter, Crowe claimed: "A friend and I set camera to capture fruit … Read more

Corel VideoStudio Pro X6

The latest release of Corel Studio focuses on building up its consumer-level video-editing and production suite. Version X6 of VideoStudio is essentially Corel's response to the rise of HD content on affordable consumer gadgets. Corel has diligently kept up with consumers' pace when it comes to supporting such file types.

Using VideoStudio Pro as a primary editing program was a mixed bag; as someone who frequently produces videos on both a casual and professional basis, I had trouble envisioning the audience that Corel is targeting with VideoStudio. But first let's cover the core features.

Editing videos clips in … Read more

Indie film 'Pulp' premieres exclusively on Xbox Live

Indie movie makers Adam Hamdy and Shaun Magher are bringing a full-feature comedy film to the Xbox Live -- exclusively.

The film, "Pulp," premiered today on Xbox Live. The comedy follows Tony Leary, a "nice-guy owner of Junk Comics," who assists police to help them bring to justice a gang of "Geordie criminals" who want to use another comic company to launder money. Leary is joined "by his trusty geek sidekicks," Rick and Keith.

Although "Pulp" might be a good movie in its own right, the big story behind the film is that it is premiering on Xbox Live. Although a slew of movies are available on Microsoft's service, none has shown first there -- until now.… Read more

The guilty truth: There's too much content

It all started when I was at a bar and accosted by three women: a Stanford Hospital resident, a UX designer, and a wine distributor.

With faces more appalled than John Boehner's when he has to meet the president, they simply couldn't believe I'd never watched "Downton Abbey."

"But you have an English accent," the wine distributor offered, as the UX designer ordered a sixth beer.

"I have a bald head, but that doesn't mean my house is full of Patrick Stewart posters," was the best I could counter.
