Wal-Mart is testing a same-day delivery service in a bid to outmaneuver Amazon in the increasingly cutthroat retail world.
The Bentonville, Ark., retail giant has been tested the service in Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis. It will next expand to San Francisco and San Jose, Calif.
The service, called Wal-Mart To Go, is a trial run for the holidays that lets customers order specific items and gifts, which can then be sent to their homes or offices that same day. Orders have to be made by noon, and there is a charge of $10 with no minimum order requirement.

If you're in the group of shoppers expecting Apple's new iPhone to be delivered to your door this Friday, UPS would prefer it if you don't call them to finagle an early delivery date.
A note on the shipper's Web site, which went up yesterday, kindly asks customers not to bother service representatives about changing the delivery date of their iPhone, saying the time is set in stone.
"Apple has required that UPS deliver iPhone shipments to customers on and not before Friday, September 21, 2012," the message reads.
Another part of the message … Read more
Demand for the iPhone 5 has been so great in the past week that Apple is apparently having trouble keeping up, as shipping estimates for preorders have now been increased to three to four weeks.
Apple was apparently caught off-guard last week by the crush of initial preorders, with the first batch of iPhone 5 models selling out within an hour. The company even reportedly stopped taking orders for a brief time on Saturday. Now Apple's online store indicates that phones purchased today might not be delivered for four weeks.
The new shipping estimates come after Apple announced yesterday … Read more
eBay is testing the same-day merchandise delivery waters with a new service called eBay Now.
The company began sending invitations this morning to eBay users in San Francisco that will allow them to get same-day shipping on goods purchased from local retailers. The service's iOS app -- still in beta -- puts the auction giant in direct competition with Amazon, which already offers same-day delivery to select cities.Read more
With the advent of pizza vending machines, maybe we should pause for a moment and appreciate the brave men and women who deliver pizzas to our front doors.
In a large city like New York, keeping up with the "30 minutes or less" delivery rule seems slightly impossible with the endless torrent of traffic snaring up city streets. To counter the chaos, many New York pizza places in the Big Apple employ droves of cyclists to zip through the city and deliver hot pies. … Read more
When your products cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, you probably want to give your customers the best possible buying experience.
Since the 1960s, airlines and others buying a brand-new Boeing airplane have picked up the 747, 757, 787 Dreamliner, and other models from the aviation giant's 60,000-square-foot Everett Delivery Center. But now, Boeing is building an all-new version of the facility (see video above), an 180,000-square-foot cathedral for picking up new airplanes that is expected to open some time next year.
When Boeing finishes building one of its well-known planes, it is towed to … Read more
Eye drops are so 1.0. Not only can they be messy and inconvenient to apply, they deliver medicine to treat dryness and other issues in imprecise volumes so quickly that they need to be reapplied every few hours.
And for those applying eye drops after laser eye surgery--when the eyes are especially tender--they can be a real pain.
Which is why researchers at the University of Florida are working to design contact lenses already helpful in protecting the eyes post-surgery that can extend the release time of anesthesia to help with this post-surgery pain.
It's a booming holiday sales season for online merchants. As CNET contributor Don Reisinger reports, U.S. consumers spent $32 billion online from November 1 to December 18, according to research firm ComScore.
That's 18 percent more than they spent in the same period of 2010. While most online sales go smoothly, there's always a risk of a product you ordered from a Web site not arriving on time, or a product other than the one you purchased being shipped, among other possible problems.
A reader contacted me yesterday about an order he placed on Cyber Monday (… Read more
Panasonic, Samsung, SanDisk, Sony, and Toshiba today announced an agreement to develop new content-protection technology for SD cards and embedded flash.
Dubbed "Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative," the press release claims the as-yet undeveloped technology will be based around public key encryption. Based on the release's limited information, it sounds like it will create unique IDs that will tie a variety of fixed and mobile CE devices to you, making content producers less nervous about allowing you to download--rather than just stream--DRM'd content to devices they currently can't control, like phones and tablets. … Read more
