LOS ANGELES -- We all scoffed at Porsche when it built the Cayenne, but that model has gone on to become the brand's volume sales leader. In 2012, the automaker sold nearly as many Cayennes as it did 911s, Boxsters, and Panameras combined. Now, at the 2013 LA Auto Show, the automaker is set to do it all over again, unveiling the fifth model in its current lineup: the so-called "baby Cayenne," now officially known as the 2015 Porsche Macan.
LOS ANGELES -- At the 2013 Los Angeles auto show, I had the rare opportunity to drive a car that won't hit U.S. showrooms until 2015, the Audi A3 e-tron. There will be an A3 model here before that, but it will be a sedan and only comes with gasoline and diesel engines. Audi takes a different tack with the A3 e-tron, using its wagon body and fitting the model with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
In fact, the A3 e-tron will represent the first plug-in hybrid car from Audi.
LOS ANGELES -- Chevrolet debuted the 2015 Colorado mid-sized pickup at the 2013 LA Auto Show this week. The new model is set to arrive at dealerships in the fall of next year.
Rather than wearing a downsized version of the highly rectangular facia that Chevy's larger Silverado trucks have, the Colorado's front end appears to have heavy influences from the automaker's sedan models, such as the Malibu or Impala. There even appears to be a hint of Camaro DNA in the Z71 model's projector headlamps. The result looks less like something a contractor would drive, … Read more
LOS ANGELES -- Beauty and the beast? These two concepts are not exclusive in the new 2015 Jaguar F-type Coupe, unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Pulling something of a reversal, Jaguar released the F-type convertible earlier this year, a stylish roadster with exceptional performance, and now is showing off the hardtop version. Automakers more frequently release convertible variants after a new hardtop model.
Jaguar's order of release is somewhat inexplicable, as it showed off a concept version of the F-type Coupe, called the C-X16, two years ago at the Frankfurt auto show. The F-type Coupe, with … Read more
LOS ANGELES -- Mansions, yachts, limousines: luxury often equates to large, but Audi has other things in mind with its new A3 model. The smallest car in its US lineup, the all-new 2015 A3 sedan gets features found on Audi's flagship sedan, the A8.
US buyers may be a little confused by the new A3, which has gone from a wagon body style to a sedan, and skipped a model year in the process. Audi intended to market a sedan here, a more popular body style, but development of the three- and five-door hatchbacks took precedence in other markets. … Read more
LOS ANGELES -- In a review of the 2014 Ford Fiesta earlier this month, I suggested waiting for the EcoBoost version, which Ford has promised will be available in just a month or two. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, I proved myself right when Ford gave me a chance to drive a 2014 Fiesta SFE with the EcoBoost engine.
This engine is a story unto itself, in that it is a lot smaller, but a lot more powerful, than the Fiesta's current engine.
Under the hood of a current generation Fiesta, you will find a fuel efficient, but … Read more
Hot on the tail of its announcement of the production Subaru Impreza WRX, the automaker has released shots of the 2015 Subaru Legacy Concept, which will debut alongside the 'Rex at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
According to the automaker, this concept celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy and provides a look at the styling cues for future Legacy models. Taking a look at the released images, the future of the Legacy looks a lot like a toned-down variant of the Subaru WRX concept that bowed in New York earlier this year.
Like the WRX, the Legacy … Read more
Detroit may be the Motor City, but cars are a quintessential part of Los Angeles culture, often serving as status symbols among the rich and famous of this entertainment capital's sun-drenched streets. And this year's Los Angeles Auto Show will serve as a showcase for some long-awaited model updates, as well as a host of new cars and concepts.
One model I've been anticipating greatly is the new Audi A3, which will be a radically different car from the small wagon sold here previously. Two years ago, Audi revealed the new A3's cabin tech at the … Read more
When BMW bought Mini and launched its version of the venerable Cooper in 2001, the car was lauded for its go-kart handling and updated British style. Beyond engine and tech changes, that car remained pretty much the same for over a decade, Mini seeming to concentrate its resources on new Cooper variants, such as the Countryman and Paceman.
Now Mini is set to release a fully updated Cooper hatchback, the mainstay of its brand.
Beyond some technical information released by Mini and a few spy shots that have emerged, we don't know too much about the car. It will … Read more
At the Frankfurt auto show in September, Nissan showed a concept called the Nismo Watch, an odd footnote to its usual display of new models and concept cars. Now, Nissan shows its serious about wearable computing, as it will unveil the 3E, a personal head-up display similar to Google Glass.
Very little information is available at this time. The video Nissan released has no dialogue, just dynamic music playing over images of a man throwing his head about. After about 30 seconds of movement, the 3E wearable display assembles itself over the man's left eye.
A final image in … Read more
