Apple keeps a running tally of its most popular free iPad apps over on iTunes, which is updated constantly to reflect current trends. At our request, we asked Apple to provide us with a list of the Top 5 most popular apps based on their most recent weekly totals.

The following CNET Top 5 video recounts … Read more

The Hunger Games Adventures for iOS: Playtime in Panem

Can't get enough Katniss Everdeen? The next movie, "Catching Fire," won't hit theaters until November, but you don't have to wait until then to return to Panem.

The Hunger Games Adventures takes you there, after a fashion, challenging you to explore, battle, and, well, make money. It's kind of a quest-oriented FarmVille, and in fact the game originated on Facebook.

If that's not your thing, or you prefer more action, check out Hunger Games: Girl on Fire. It's an endless runner that's all about running, jumping, and shooting.

Here, you need … Read more

Temple Run 2 scores record as fastest-growing mobile game

Temple Run addicts have propelled its sequel into new territory.

In 13 days, Temple Run 2 has been downloaded more than 50 million times by iOS, Android, and Kindle users, developer Imangi Studios said yesterday, making it the fastest-growing mobile game ever.

In reaching this milestone, the action game topped the previous record holder, Angry Birds Space, which rocketed to 50 million downloads in 35 days.

Temple Run 2 places you in a jungle where you have to outrun a giant ape, leap over chasms, and swing on ropes to get past hazards. Along the way, you pick up gold … Read more

Official Stratego game debuts for iPad

Remember Stratego? It's the classic capture-the-flag boardgame. And it's now available for iPad.

Why just iPad? I'm not entirely sure. Granted, the board would be cramped on an iPhone or iPod Touch screen, but I've seen plenty of other games work around that. (Monopoly, anyone?)

That curiosity aside, Stratego for iPad does a fine job recreating the original while adding some welcome digital touches. For starters, you can create and save multiple board setups (i.e., troop deployments), a huge time-saver and a great way to test how various deployments work against your opponents.

And speaking … Read more

Who ya gonna call? Try Ghostbusters for iOS

There's not much to explain the timing behind Beeline Interactive's new Ghostbusters game for iOS. It's not like there's a new movie coming out, nor even a Blu-ray or 3D re-release of the original.

But here it is all the same, a cartoony but complex resource-management sim that's reminiscent of other freemium games like Men in Black 3 and The Simpsons. If you're into that sort of thing, I'd say you're in for a treat.

The new Ghostbusters (not to be confused with Ghostbusters: Paranormal Blast, an augmented-reality action game) tasks you … Read more

Temple Run 2 swings onto Android devices

Android users can now try to escape giant apes, swing on ropes, and jump over chasms, all courtesy of Temple Run 2.

The fast-paced action game debuted on Google Play today, where Android device owners can download it for free. Temple Run 2 has already proven a hit among iPhone and iPad users by racking up 20 milllion downloads from Apple's App Store in its first four days.

The new game places you in a jungle environment just like the original but throws in a variety of new twists and turns and better graphics.

This time you start off … Read more

Four great game deals for PC and Wii

For the past several nights, my son and I have been battling orcs, wizards, wargs, and cave trolls -- and having a blast doing it.

Want to get in on that action? Ending today, Steam has LEGO Lord of the Rings (PC) for $14.99. That's half the regular price, and way less than half what I paid for the Xbox version just last month (grumble, grumble).

The LEGO games are all kinds of awesome. They're fun, funny, and challenging, with at least as many puzzles to solve as foes to dispatch. And there's not a trace … Read more

Shaq Versus Evil Mutant Zombies

Are you tired of the whole zombie craze yet? What if those zombies happen to be mutants in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? What if the hero protagonist in all this mess was, oh, I don't know, 7'1'', 325-lb former NBA Superstar Shaquille O'Neal?

Yes, someone on this earth not only conceived of this, but managed to produce it, even going so far as getting the man of steel himself to lend his voice.

ShaqDown (Android, iOS) is One Spear Entertainment's first outing. Their business model apparently consists of building mobile games around celebrities, and we'll see … Read more
