This comes the same day the company introduced new versions of the iBooks and iTunes U software their look and feel in line with the rest of iOS 7. Notably, iBooks has lost its oft-criticized wooden shelf motif, the kind of real-world software design flourish championed by former head of iOS Scott Forstall.
In a compact San Francisco office suite equipped with soldering stations and swipe-testing machines, Coin's team of seven has been working furiously to perfect the final prototype of an unlimited credit card. No, not one that will let you charge with abandon. Rather, a device as slim as a standard piece of payment plastic that can hold countless credit, debit, and gift cards in its dynamic magnetic stripe.
Kanishk Parashar, the CEO and founder of the Y Combinator-backed startup, embodies the effort-worn entrepreneur. "I got to work out today," he said, eyeing the limited set of weights … Read more

Apple device users who are frustrated when Siri fails to answer a question may one day be able tap into the crowd to get a better response.
The Apple patent application "Crowd sourcing information to fulfill user requests," published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, envisions a few ways to help Siri when it comes up empty.
Siri typically relies on such sites as Bing, Yelp, and WolframAlpha to gather the data needed to answer a question. But sometimes those sources aren't equipped to provide an accurate response, especially if the question itself is phrased … Read more
Otterbox is by far the dominant force in iPhone cases, according to a new study, but Apple is starting to make inroads.
Otterbox, which makes a wide array of cases for mobile products, owns more than 50 percent of the iPhone 4S case market, according to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). And while the company is still holding the biggest share for individual firms in the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S market, Apple's cases are likely an increasingly worrisome presence for the case-maker.
According to CIRP, Apple's iPhone 5C cases account for nearly 10 percent … Read more
Facebook on Wednesday released an updated iOS Messenger app and announced that its Android version would become more broadly available after two weeks in limited testing.

In fact, iFixit gave the device a 2 out of 10 for repairability; the higher the number, the easier a device is to repair. The bottom line: the iPad Mini with Retina display isn't so … Read more

The new iPhones have apparently convinced only a small percentage of iPhone 5 owners to upgrade.
Polling 400 US phone customers that activated an iPhone between September 20 and October 20, research firm CIRP found that only 6 percent of iPhone 5 owners jumped to an 5S or 5C. In contrast, 12 percent of iPhone 4S owners had upgraded to the iPhone 5 over the same period last year.
Further, among the two-thirds of those polled who upgraded from any iPhone to the 5S or 5C in September and October, fewer jumped ship from the iPhone 5 relative to the … Read more
