Apple didn't make any changes to the exterior of the Air. The 11-inch Air is still 11.8 inches wide, 7.56 inches deep, and between 0.11 and 0.68 inch high. It weighs 2.38 pounds. Pricing starts at $999 (U.S.) and can reach $1,749, depending on the configuration. But thanks to several hardware updates, the new Air offers faster Wi-Fi, more base storage, and almost double the battery life.
Lots of computer makers play fast and loose with the "Ultrabook" designation, but for my money, the only systems that qualify are superthin, superlight, and superfast.
Like this one: while supplies last, DealFisher has the Acer Aspire S7-391-6413 13.3-inch touch-screen ultrabook for $749.99 shipped. That's on the steep side for a laptop, yes, but consider this: it has a list price of $1,399.99 (!), and sells elsewhere (like at the Microsoft Store) for $999.
Lenovo is trying to reel in customers with a new low-priced Windows 8 convertible.
Available for order now and estimated to ship by August 28, the Miix is a 10.1-inch Windows 8 tablet with a "quick flip" AccuType keyboard that converts it into a notebook. The keyboard is also detachable, so the device can stay slim when in tablet mode.
The Miix starts at just $599.99. For that price, the specs are on the low end but still enough to power Windows 8. The Mixx is equipped with a 1.8GHz Intel Atom processor, Intel HD … Read more
Having owned an ultrabook for the past few months, my laptop priorities have changed. If I were shopping for a new one, I'd look for very thin, very light, and very inexpensive -- though that can be a hard mix to come by.
Today only, and while supplies last, Tech.Woot has the Acer Aspire S3-391-6423 13.3-inch ultrabook for $449.99, plus $5 for shipping. It's new, not refurbished, and it sells elsewhere in the $600-650 range.
If we're being technical, this isn't really an ultrabook -- at least by Intel's definition. That's … Read more
In the market for a new PC? If you want one that runs Windows, you've probably discovered that your choices are Windows 8, Windows 8, or Windows 8.
Sure, there are some Windows 7 systems floating around out there, but for the most part they're refurbished.
Dell to the rescue. The company still offers a selection of new Windows 7-powered desktops and laptops, and for the next few days, they're all on sale.
Dear Mr. Pichai,
My colleagues inform me that you've been sending out invitations to a soiree next week to chat about Android and such. I'm sure my invite is sitting in my mailbox back in New Mexico, but unfortunately my summer travel plans prevent me from being able to attend/crash your fine event.
Nonetheless, seeing as how you're new to this gig from Google's Chrome unit and you seem to be working to get up to speed quickly, I thought I'd send along one simple request as a long-term part-time resident of the Google ecosystem:
Please give me the amenities I need to become a full-timer. … Read more
Now here's something you don't see every day.
Through tomorrow, or until supplies run out, HP has the refurbished Pavilion DM1-4310NR 11.6-inch laptop for $259.99 shipped. Actually, that's not so unusual. But this is: It includes two years of 4G service via T-Mobile.
I know, right? Built-in 4G! And two free years of service! That's kinda awesome. Ah, but there is a catch of sorts: You're limited to just 200MB of data per month.
That, my friends, is not a lot of data. Forget streaming Netflix or even YouTube vids; you'll need … Read more
I'm on record as saying that, even at $249, a Chromebook is still overpriced -- especially when you can get a bigger, more powerful, Windows-based laptop for not much more.
But $169? Now it's time to re-evaluate. And speaking of time, you don't have much: Today only, and while supplies last, Best Buy has the refurbished Samsung Chromebook XE303C12 for $169.99, shipped (plus sales tax). As noted, it sells new for $249.
A Chromebook, as you may know, runs Google's Chrome OS, meaning you can't run any Windows software -- but you can accomplish … Read more
The other day I mentioned my change of heart regarding touch-screens on laptops, noting that it's a nice feature to have for scrolling Web pages and documents, zooming photos, and so on.
Also nice to have: a laptop that converts into a tablet. Like this one: While supplies last, DealFisher has the Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u Ultrabook for $599.99 shipped. It's new, not refurbished, and it sold for $899 when it first hit the scene back in December. (However, Lenovo was selling these refurbished for under $500 in May.)
In case the name didn't give it … Read more
Windows 8 users who've struggled with trackpad issues may find some relief in the finished version of Windows 8.1.
Current trackpad drivers designed for Windows 8 can't necessarily take advantage of all the features and gestures available in the operating system. To rectify that problem, Microsoft, Intel, Synaptics, and Elan are teaming up to directly enable pointer, multi-touch, and gesture support in Windows 8.1, according to The Verge.
Tapping into the new "Precision Touchpad" support, the group also wants to transform future Windows 8.1 notebook trackpads into small touch screens that would offer … Read more
