Sony camera cuts the cord

Wi-Fi? Pffft. Sony's late to the wireless photography party, but it bypasses the hot spot in favor of the connected home. Its Cyber-shot DSC-G1 integrates DLNA--Digital Living Network Alliance--wireless connectivity, a superset of Wi-Fi that adds interdevice recognition. So far, though, there aren't many DLNA-enabled devices.

Besides, with its 921,000-pixel, 3.5-inch LCD screen, the G1 is practically a TV (in contrast, the usual camera LCD has about 220,000 pixels). Two gigabytes of internal memory make it possible to carry your whole photo library around with you for display on that huge LCD.

Sony is now taking preorders for the DSC-H7/B and the higher-end DSC-H9/B. Each features 8 megapixels of resolution and Carl Zeiss optics. Offered at a price range of less than $500, these two both should be a sure hit.

Sony Cyber-shot cameras: Now in high-def!

Sony's still thinking small with its Cyber-shot digital cameras, keeping most models thin, light, and easy to pocket. The company just announced its spring lineup of Cyber-shots, which includes no less than five new T- and W-series cameras that measure less than an inch thick.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 is the first ultracompact digital camera to break 10 megapixels. The W200 features a 12-megapixel sensor that can record images up to 4,000x3,000. 2007 Canon PowerShot SD models hold a few surprises

Another year, another crop of snapshot cameras. This year, Canon's going a bit retro with its Elph design, bringing back the high-contrast black accents that appeared on the original film Elphs 10 years ago.

They've come a long way in that decade. This year's SD750 and SD1000 are 7-megapixel replacements for the the very popular 6-megapixel models, the SD630 and the SD600, respectively. Yes, that's right: The SD750 is the higher-end model of the two.

Cramming large lenses into ultracompact cameras isn't very new. Neither is a vertically oriented digital camera design--in fact, most of the earliest models looked more like camcorders than traditional film cameras. But most manufacturers have been folding their optical path sideways to fit 4x-plus lenses into tiny cameras. But when Canon went looking for more interiorl real estate to fit a 10x 39-to-390mm-equivalent lens into its new 7-megapixel ultracompact, it took a New York approach and went vertical.

Canon is on a roll. Just after the release of the PowerShot A460 and the A550, the company announced two new PowerShot A-series cameras on the way, the Canon PowerShot A560 and the A570 IS.

The two 7-megapixel cameras are nearly identical, save for one important distinction. The A570 IS, like other Canon -IS cameras, the PowerShot SD800 IS and the A710 IS, uses optical image stabilization. Sony's new Cyber-shot cameras partially revealed

An anonymous tipster has apparently tipped off Engadget to a catalog showing the British versions of Sony's new Cyber-shot cameras. Most of the catalog images indicate the information is confidential until February 27, which is when we'll have more details on the U.S models.

While you wait, here's what Engadget is reporting based on its catalog browsing: the new models are called the T20HDPR (camera/printer bundle), T100 (pictured), T20, H9, H7, G1, W200, and W90 Cyber-shots.

Some phones should never be made

There's really not much to say about these phones. Just look at the picture--it's too depressing to spend much time discussing them. What we will say is that, according to Gearfuse, these are Samsung 707SC handsets slathered rather disgustingly with colored stones made by Swarovski. (What a surprise!) They were just released in Asia, made for Softbank Japan. As far as we're concerned, Samsung had a better idea with its Simpsons models.
