Rumor: Chrome OS tablet coming in November

As Google's partners start striding into the tablet market with the Android OS, a report from AOL-owned software blog Download Squad claims the search giant will release a Chrome OS-based tablet in November.

According to the blog, which cited unnamed sources, Google has partnered with HTC to offer a Chrome OS-based tablet. The device will run on Verizon Wireless' network and potentially be offered for a nominal price or as little as free, as long as consumers enter into a Verizon data contract. The blog's sources say the tablet will hit store shelves on November 26.

A doodling tablet coming to the Wii

A doodle pad is noodling its way to the Wii.

Game developer THQ unveiled on Tuesday the uDraw GameTablet. The accessory, which is designed exclusively for the Wii, allows people to draw and color on a 4-inch by 6-inch surface with a detachable stylus. As the player draws on the tablet, the artwork will show up on your television screen. The tablet's uDraw Studio software, which comes with the tablet, is what allows players to draw and color.

A Wii version of Pictionary and a new title called Dood's Big Adventure will be sold separately.

The clock is ticking for iPad competitors

Some of the world's biggest electronics companies are readying an assault on the tablet market. But before they even begin, they find themselves at an early disadvantage.

Though Samsung, LG Electronics, Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Asus, Research In Motion, and Dell have announced or hinted at touchscreen tablets that will arrive between now and March 2011, they're way late to the party. Since the iPad's debut in April, Apple has built a huge lead in this category--in terms of actual devices sold but also in many consumers' minds.

The category is new--a large touch-screen device bigger than a smartphone … Read more

Asus $399 Android tablet to arrive in March

Is Asus trying to make up for lost time?

While Apple's iPad has been selling out of stores since April, Asus is one of the many PC makers busily working on its own tablet since then. After announcing two versions of the Eee Pad in June, Asus CEO Jerry Shen told reporters on Friday that it has yet another tablet in the works.

This one, also part of the Eee Pad family, is set to sell for $399 and is scheduled to be ready by March, the executive said during the company's earnings call. It's different than … Read more

FCC outs Archos Android mini tablet

Does an Android device with a 3.2-inch screen still qualify as a "tablet"? That was the first question that popped into my head when I saw images of the Archos 32 Android tablet that were published Tuesday by the FCC.

Maybe I'm still feeling the effects of my time with the Dell Streak, but aren't tablets supposed to stretch beyond the confines of the pocket? Maybe not. It seems manufacturers have decided anything with a smartphone OS and a touch screen is a tablet--a tactic that may come back to bite them if Apple starts … Read more

Early take on India's $35 tablet: 'Fairly impressive'

Remember that $35 tablet out of India we told you about last month? If you want to see the much-talked-about prototype in moving color, a gadget show on Indian television just featured an exclusive hands-on that could help dissipate some of the skepticism about the device.

"Everybody actually said, 'It cannot happen, a $35 tablet,' and not only does it exist, it works and it works brilliantly," said Rajiv Makhni, co-host of the show "Gadget Guru," who took the computer through its paces with show cohort Vikram Chandra and then talked all aspects of the gadget … Read more

Samsung rumored to debut tablet in September

The Samsung Galaxy smartphone is getting a big brother--some say as soon as early September.

Korea's JoongAng Daily quoted a "high-ranking official" at Samsung who indicated that the Galaxy Tab, Samsung's version of the iPad, will be on display at IFA Berlin, which starts September 3. IFA is Europe's equivalent of the Consumer Electronics Show held in Vegas every year, the major difference being that it's a public event, not just a trade show.

A Samsung Mobile official said in June that the Galaxy Tab would be ready by the third quarter, so Wednesday'… Read more
