Learn how to be a real guitar hero

It's a crazy notion, but some people would actually rather learn to play a real guitar as opposed to a game controller. What freaks.

Yet we're a tolerant lot here at Crave, so today we offer a device designed to help teach this distinctly analog activity. Make no mistake, however, we're not abandoning our gadgety roots: It's still a digital product, and it even uses the kind of touch technology that we all know and love (sort of).

The "Touch Sensitive Teaching Guitar" was designed with the help of Gibson and incorporates elements of … Read more

WeatherBug available for iPhone, iPod Touch

WeatherBug has added the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch to the list of devices that can use its mobile weather service.

The weather data service provides users with information on temperature, wind speed and direction, forecasts, live weather views and even a video on the weekly outlook.

iPhone/Touch owners can download the application from this WeatherBug iPhone Web site.

Keep in mind, iPhone owners are not the only ones who can use WeatherBug for mobile. WeatherBug is available for a large list of carriers and smartphones.

Metasploit adds iPhone/iPod Touch hacks

As reported in ComputerWorld, security researcher H.D. Moore has included several iPhone and iPod Touch exploits in the latest Metasploit tool. The free tool is used by professional pen-testers and criminal hackers alike. The new exploits take advantage of a flaw in the TIFF image-rendering library and are similar to flaws used by the iPhone Dev Team.

"This exploit is rock solid. It's very reliable, as reliable as the WMF [Windows Metafile] exploits in Windows. You can send it in an e-mail; you can embed it in a Web page," Moore told ComputerWorld.

Apple's Jobs says third-party iPhone apps coming in February

Editor's note: This story was updated at 9:59 a.m. PDT.

Steve Jobs made it official Wednesday morning: third-party applications are coming to the iPhone.

Apple's CEO posted another of his open letters to the world Wednesday on Apple's Hot News section of its Web site, confirming reports that a software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone will be released to developers next year. It's coming in February, rather than January as reported, but application developers and iPhone owners will probably be able to wait the extra month.

Sprint brings HTC Touch to your fingertips

Today, Sprint officially announced its plans to offer the HTC Touch smartphone with availability starting on November 4 for $249.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. If you'll remember, we reviewed an unlocked version of the Touch back in June, which made headlines for its all-touch-screen interface--pre-iPhone release. Though we had major issues with the poor text entry input methods (or lack thereof), it didn't seem to bother too many CNET readers, garnering an average 8.5 user rating.

The Sprint HTC Touch features some enhancements and carrier-specific services not found on … Read more

Teenager claims to have easy iPod Touch jailbreak

A 13-year-old hacker claims to have developed code that would let you put third-party applications on an iPod Touch without having to take a computer science class.

AriX sent us a press release Sunday promoting iJailbreak, an automated program that allows third-party applications to run on the iPod Touch. It doesn't work for the iPhone, and it's only available for iPod Touch owners who are using Intel-based Macs. I don't have an iPod Touch at my disposal right now, so I'm unable to test whether it actually works, but some users on MacRumors.com reported that … Read more

'Transparent' interface to trump touch screens?

Touch screen phones like LG's Prada, Samsung's Armani, and some other big seller seem to drive home the point that touch screens are here to stay, and are likely the future of the phone market. Typing accuracy isn't exactly the easiest feat when your digits hit the screen, since your fingers obscure part of the image. Mitsubishi Research Labs has a solution to provide the elegance of a touch screen interface without obscuring the screen. It calls it the 'transparent interface.' Rather than poking at the front of a screen idly, researchers placed sensors at the back … Read more
