Desktops

Quake-proofing your workstation

Those of you who don't live in earthquake country may scoff at these, but Californians will understand their need all too well.

These devices, which Akihabara News says are common in Japan, are meant to secure your desk and computer equipment in the event of some major shaking. The pads and brackets supposedly work "without glue or nails," but we're not sure what kind of mechanism is used to keep them in place. (Velcro won't help much in a 7+ magnitude quake, as we saw in San Francisco.)

They might not be the most attractive … Read more

Siamese LCDs are joined at the stand

No, you're not seeing double. And no, it's not an image-loading bug. (Though that's always possible, until we work out the kinks in Crave's publishing system.)

These are really dual LCD monitors, joined at the hip by a shared pedestal. Soyo's GoVideo Dual LCD line comes in your choice of 17- or 19-inch screens respectively priced at $1,000 and $1,200, including built-in speakers, according to Electronista. They can also pivot 180 degrees away from each other (see bottom photo), allowing a face-to-face work style that reminds us of old-fashioned partners desks.

Dell laptop vs. London Underground

We have a confession to make: When people were making fun of Dell's monstrous half-laptop, half-desktop beast, we secretly wanted one. But despite our regular visits to the gym, we weren't sure if we'd be able to carry all 18+ pounds of this "mobile" computer without risking a hernia. Then our cousins at Crave UK came to the rescue with this video of a staffer lugging the 20-inch Dell XPS M2010 around the streets and subways of London. Check it out--it's as hysterical as it is useful, if you're thinking of springing $3,… Read more

Vista is here, and Microsoft means it this time (sort of)

Robert Vamosi has taken the just-announced RTM (Release to Manufacturer) version of Windows Vista for a spin, and he's got the First Take, video, and photo gallery to prove it.

Usually, the RTM label means development is all done. But Microsoft's still working on fixing a few bugs before Vista's business release on November 30 and its retail release in January 2007. However, this version is the best indicator yet of what to expect from the final four Vistas: Windows Vista Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Ultimate.

The price of an energy sleuth

I was psyched when a reader said this little box can show in dollars and kilowatt-hours just how much every last lightbulb, TV, and forgotten camera charger in your house costs you. The Energy Detective, or TED, will flash an alarm when your hourly or monthly power consumption reaches painfully expensive levels, and when spells of high or low voltage might damage connected gear.

At $150, TED costs the same as the Kill-a-Watt and its ilk, which can measure only one gadget's power hunger at a time. You could recoup that cost in a tax refund and then some, … Read more

New Razr-sharp smart phone in the works?

Hey little Glofiish, better enjoy your 15 minutes of fame while you can because it appears another slim smart phone is in the works. CrunchGear has a story about a rumored Linux-based Motorola Razr smart phone and while details are scarce, there is a fuzzy slide show image of the mobile. Yes, I'm about as tired of the Razr craze as the next person. But add the smart phone capabilities and I'm willing to listen, especially if it rocks a flip phone form factor because in all honesty, the Cingular 3125 really didn't do it for me.… Read more

Samsung's PC is mini all right, but why?

A few years ago, we purchased a Sony "Slimtop" PC--and it wasn't even the tablet model, so please don't ask us why. (We were trying to lose weight at the time, so maybe it was some twisted form of projection. Enough about that.)

A new Samsung mini-PC, by comparison, makes the Slimtop seem morbidly obese. The MX10 measures a scant 10.4 by 11.8 inches and, other than its thickness of slightly more than 2 inches, is smaller than a lot of laptops on the market (sans screen, of course). Akihabara News says it includes … Read more

Pumpkin PC: But where's the USB?

There's something about Halloween that seems to raise the geek freak quotient more than any other day of the year.

A staple for the last few years has been the the PC pumpkin. And while the concept is hardly new, we're happy to report that the digital seasonal squashes seem to be getting more refined (if that's the word) with each October.

This year's featured pumpkin mod, for example, comes complete with an R.I.P. tombstone keyboard, skeleton mouse and a power plug integrated seamlessly into the stem. And it's wireless, of course, so … Read more

Samsung resurrects dual-hinged phone

As the saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed try, try again." Well it appears Samsung is following such advice to the letter. After the relatively lackluster performance last year of Cingular's Samsung SGH-D307, the Korean electronics giant seems to have gone back to the drawing board for dual-hinged devices. Photos of the upcoming Samsung U710 appeared on Howard Forums today with the promise that it's coming to a CDMA carrier near you. And if Howard Forums is correct that the phone's official designation is SCH-U710, then Verizon Wireless will be the lucky … Read more
