Samsung: 10M Galaxy Notes sold in nine months

Samsung Electronics has sold 10 million Galaxy Notes in the past nine months, according to Younghee Lee, head of global marketing for the conglomerate's mobile division.

Lee made the comment in the middle of Samsung's unveiling of the Galaxy Note 10.1 today in New York. The company previously said it sold 5 million 5.3-inch Galaxy Notes in five months.

The Galaxy Note sold well despite skepticism that the device was too big to serve as a phone, and too small to work as a tablet. Many had taken to calling it a "phablet."

Quad-core Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet costs $500, $550

On the heels of last week's global launch, Samsung has officially announced U.S. pricing for its 10-inch Galaxy Note tablet.

The tablet, whose standout feature is its pressure-sensitive S Pen stylus and compatible apps, comes in two colors, deep gray and white. It also comes in two storage capacities. A 16GB model costs $499, but $549 gets you 32GB for your movies, music, photos, and apps. An additional $50 for double the internal memory is a nice, juicy carrot to upsell customers to the pricier model. (The Apple's iPad pricing runs along similar lines: the $499 entry-level … Read more

Samsung launches Galaxy Note 10.1; 4G LTE version later this year

After a long wait, Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1 is finally launching.

The device, which was first unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, comes with a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The most notable advancement over its predecessor, however, is the device's screen, which measures 10.1 inches. The original Samsung Galaxy Note comes with a 5.3-inch screen.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with Samsung's S Pen stylus, allowing users to "write" all over the screen. The device comes in a Wi-Fi-only model, … Read more

Samsung invite suggests Galaxy Note 10.1 for August 15

Samsung has just confirmed one of my predictions for its now less-mysterious August 15 product launch in New York: the product in question is definitely a tablet.

CNET's invitation to the unveiling depicts an outline of a device with tablet dimensions in casual, artistic lines. That bolsters my belief that we'll be seeing a U.S. release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-fledged tablet that will make use of a stylus to interact with productivity and creativity tools. (Hence the doodles on the invitation.)

I first saw the Galaxy Note 10.1 at Mobile World … Read more

Samsung schedules Unpacked event for IFA conference

Brace yourselves, Samsung fans. The company has scheduled a new Unpacked event for August 29, where it's assumed it will debut a new Galaxy device. As to whether we're in for a smartphone or tablet remains unclear at this point, but our Magic 8-Ball points to both. Specifically, we might expect a hybrid of the two form factors in Samsung's second world version of the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy Note II.

Whispers have circulated for some time now that Samsung is readying a new version of the so-called phablet, with an impending fall arrival.… Read more

Questions rise over Skype wiretapping

It's time to tap into the juiciest tech conversations for Monday:

Microsoft has not given a straight answer about whether its Skype service can facilitate law enforcement wiretapping of conversations. Previously, the online chat service was so heavily encrypted that the company went on the record about not being able to participate with wiretapping.

But Skype just made a change to its technology, and some say the changes make it possible to intercept a call. But when asked, Microsoft didn't admit if wiretapping was possible. It told Slate that Skype "co-operates with law enforcement agencies as much … Read more

No U.S. launch date yet for Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1

Although Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet with its larger stylus and screen at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, don't hold your breath for a U.S. announcement anytime soon.

As for the Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung told a group of journalists today in San Francisco not to settle on the specs for the tablet we saw in Barcelona in February. The electronics giant wanted to show off something new and interesting at MWC, said a representative, but warned that there's still some time before the product will ship, and therefore … Read more

iPad rivals catching up: Can iPad 3 keep them at bay?

Apple should be blowing us away with the iPad 3, but it probably won't.

The latest rumors call for a higher resolution screen on par with the iPhone's Retina Display, a possible upgrade to the iOS software, and possibly a few other improvements. That's certainly enough to draw the Apple faithful and sell a ton of iPads. But with the rapid advances that the competition is making, will it be enough to secure the company's continued dominance in the tablet business?

Sure, the iPad has been a blockbuster franchise for Apple. In the fourth quarter alone, … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 officially a real tablet that makes sense

BARCELONA, Spain--If you, like me, are still trying to figure out what the Samsung Galaxy Note with its S-Pen stylus is really for, then the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet is refreshingly simple as a large slate with a clear purpose.

Leaked before its official announcement at Mobile World Congress, the Galaxy Note 10.1 has the potential to offer a true tablet experience that goes beyond the usual.

That throwback S-Pen stylus has finally found a calling, thanks to improved "pen" hardware and apps that, at least in my demo, seemed carefully considered (I'll know … Read more
