GM confirms electric Cadillac on the way

General Motors has officially given the green light to an electrically driven Cadillac called the ELR.

The ELR, which was called the Converj as a concept car, will use the same powertrain system as the Chevy Volt. The car will have a lithium ion battery pack and electric motor to propel the car. When the batteries are running low, a 4-cylinder gas engine kicks in to generate enough charge for the battery to power the motor.

GM said yesterday that development of the ELR is just under way. It will announce details on timing and price later today.

Report: Cadillac's electric Converj concept given greenlight

The site Green Car Reports learned from a GM insider that Cadillac has given the go-ahead for a production car based on the Converj concept it showed off at the 2009 Detroit auto show. The Converj concept is driven by the same series hybrid system as the Chevy Volt.

The Converj is a two-door sport coupe using an electric motor to drive the wheels. A gas engine works in conjunction with a lithium ion battery pack to provide electricity.

The performance turning house plans to produce a dozen 1000 horsepower Twin Turbo CTS-V Coupes next year that have been customized inside and out.

Cadillac will reveal a new infotainment system, and it's not just IntelliLink rebadged with a couple of cosmetic changes, according to automotive blog GMAuthority.

Chevrolet and Buick are starting to implement their new infotainment platforms in vehicles, but Cadillac's future communications system is still tightly under wraps. But not for long. GM to add 110 jobs and invest $331 million in Arlington, Texas plant

General Motors today made another announcement regarding allocation of the $2 billion in U.S. plant investment.

The automaker will add 110 jobs and invest $331 million to purchase tooling and equipment and expand the Arlington Assembly Plant.

Currently, the plant's 2,400 hourly and salaried employees make Chevrolet Tahoes, Suburbans, GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades.

"This investment will allow us to continue building award-winning full-size SUVs that offer better fuel efficiency than ever before without sacrificing the features and functionality they've come to expect," GM Manufacturing Manager Larry Zahner said Thursday. "We remain committed … Read more
