Get a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet for $239

I would argue that Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is already a steal at $269. Thus, today's deal practically amounts to theft.

For a limited time, and while supplies last, Staples has the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with Special Offers tablet for $239 shipped (plus sales tax). That's after applying coupon code 46097 at checkout.

But wait, there's more. Staples is offering a $40 gift card by mail when you purchase this model. It's not quite as good as a check or debit card, but I suspect you could burn through $40 at … Read more

George Takei wins at Amazon reviews, too

Amusing Amazon reviews are an art form. They are delicate flowers of funny that need to be carefully nurtured in order to strike the right balance between absurdity, plausibility, and humor.

George Takei, known as Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek" and Mr. Internet anywhere social media resides, has the magic formula down.

Only slight sleuthing is needed to determine that the "George Takei" leaving reviews on Amazon is the real deal. He also cross-posts them to his official Facebook page. So far, he's only racked up six reviews, but they're good ones. He has tackled products as diverse as the "Best of David Hasselhoff" CD to the Denon AKDL1 Dedicated Link Cable.… Read more

Visit Amazon.com and you'll find a bevy of recommendations to fill your digital shopping cart: books similar to what you've read on your Kindle or clothes and gadgets based on what else you've looked at.

Bezos: Forget profits for now; we're still spending

SEATTLE -- Since its earliest days, Amazon has put investing in new business ahead of expanding its profit margins, often to shareholder chagrin.

At the company's annual meeting here today, Chief Executive Jeff Bezos repeated the mantra, and listed more than a dozen areas into which the online giant is pumping its resources.

"We are still thinking of this as day one," Bezos said of the company that first sold shares to the public 16 years ago and now has 88,000 employees and 209 million active customers. "In fact, I think the alarm clock is … Read more
