While the iPhone certainly isn't the first mobile handset to suffer from freezes, its functional breadth and the fact that many of its users install unsupported third-party applications make the device, generally, more freeze-prone.
We've covered iPhone freezes on a number of occasions, noting that users should keep ample free space on the device and offering some suggestions that might alleviate crashes and freezes due to to corrupt data. Aside from not running browsing in Safari while playing music with the iPod application, however, actual usage notes on preventing freezes have been few.
Several users have now reported, … Read more
It didn't take long after installing Canonical Ltd.'s Ubuntu 7.10 version of Linux for me to decide I liked what I saw. A quick tour of the Applications, Places, and System menus indicated that converting from Windows to Linux would be relatively seemless. The only fly in the ointment was my inability to get any of three wireless adapters to work with the OS.
World-class applications without paying a dime I expected to find the Mozilla Firefox browser bundled with Ubuntu, and seeing links on the Applications*Office menu to OpenOffice.org's Database, Presentation, Spreadsheet, and … Read more
My 3-year-old Hewlett-Packard PC stopped playing optical discs a couple of months ago. Not only were the built-in DVD and CD-ROM drives out of commission, I couldn't even get a brand-new external DVD drive to work. I searched and searched for driver updates, but came up empty. It wasn't until I happened upon a Registry patch on Chris Pirillo's great Lockergnome site that I got the machine to recognize the optical drives.
The patch was provided by a volunteer who had no affiliation with HP, Microsoft, or the drive vendors. It's not uncommon for PC experts … Read more

Several users have reported an issue where iPhone ringtones assigned to specific contacts do not work. In other words, the ringtone can be selected and assigned to the contact properly, but when the contact calls, the default ringtone is played.
In some cases, this issue may be due to a number mismatch -- the number is stored on way on your iPhone but comes in using a different format. For instance, if you have the number stored in full international format, but it comes in as a local number, the correct ringtone may not play.
In other cases, the fix … Read more

The standby and hibernate modes in Microsoft's Windows XP and the sleep mode in Vista are meant to be great time-savers. But too often a sleeping PC wakes up on its own--or doesn't awaken when you want it to.
The latter problem is particularly common with Vista, which is proving itself to be pretty worthless, even as Windows versions go.
The first time I set one of my XP systems to standby, it sprung to life each night, showing a message that my network was detected. The problem disappeared after I entered the machine's BIOS (press the … Read more
Several users have reported a problem where the iPhone inexplicably cannot access various network services, including Web pages in Safari, YouTube content and more despite the presence of a properly operating EDGE or WiFi connection. Safari generally deliver this error message when the problem is occurring:
"Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server"
In some cases, the problem appears to be DNS-related: some sites and other network services load properly, but others (known to be working) do not. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to toggle DNS settings on the iPhone.
