Mac OS 7.6 and Ethernet: There may be a problem after all!

Last time, I posted a message about an Ethernet problem with 7.6., as reported by StarNine. I subsequently retracted the report, after learning that StarNine claimed that their original statement was in error. Now, it seems that I may need to retract the retraction. I just received the following item from an Apple employee (who wishes to remain anonymous):

"Your original notice is correct (at least for AppleShare and the Ethernet driver, I don't know about it's effects on TCP/IP). There is a problem with the Ethernet driver and PCI Power Macs. This problem, it … Read more

Apple Blues follow-up and encouragement on "maintenance mode"

Just to clarify: when I wrote the Apple Blues item last time:

a. I was not personally lamenting the demise of every cited technology. Most of them I do not use anyway and I recognized that their departure might be for the best in the long run. Still, to some extent, this is akin to finding that your big toe has to be amputated to prevent the spread of some infection. The amputation may be for the best - but it isn't something to jump for joy about. It would have been better if the infection could have been … Read more

Epson drivers posted

Macromedia posts Shockwave plugs a. Microsoft has released a fix for Internet Explorer's Java security hole. This is in addition to the previous Java cache issue problem, for which Microsoft had posted a fix in February (as also described on the same web page). Is it just me, or is keeping track of this recent rash of security leaks (and sorting out which fix fixes which problem) getting to be more than a minor hassle?

b. Macromedia also has posted updates that fix the Shockwave security hole. MacInTouch (where I first spotted this info) lists both an ftp siteRead more

PowerBook bugs reported by 0'Grady

a. PowerBook 3400 and Open Transport O'Grady's Power Page reports that some "PowerBook 3400 users have reported problems with Open Transport 1.1.2. Symptoms include lockups when switching an AppleTalk connection to or from LocalTalk when there is no active LocalTalk connection and strange lockups when sleeping the computer. The best bet (if you have these symptoms) is to stick with Open Transport 1.1.1."

b. PowerBook 1400 and Wacom tablet Jason also reports a confirmed bug involving the PowerBook 1400 and the the ADB ArtZ II tablet. "The result is poor control … Read more

MacLinkPlus and delays in opening Claris documents

Power Computing RAM issues a. Chris Heatherly (of Power Computing) reports that the ATI-PowerCenter compatibility problem, that I mentioned last time, is the same sound "drop-out" problem that had been mentioned here on MacFixIt awhile back - and it affects all Catalyst-based computers. Chris writes: "Power has resolved the issue in the PCI Timing Update. This update has been in seeding for a few weeks and should be available publicly this week (should it pass final qualification). Power has supplied the code for this update to ATI for inclusion in their VR drivers."

b. Bill Fox'… Read more

MacLinkPlus and delays in opening Claris documents

Recently, when I opened a document from the Open dialog box of any of my Claris applications (such as ClarisWorks and ClarisDraw), there was a noticeable delay of about 3 or 4 seconds from when I selected to open the file to when it first actually started to open - a delay that I had not seen before. I did not think much of this until a colleague of mine (Robbie Stewart) reported the same symptom - except that his delay (on his slower Mac) was more like 20 seconds! A little research on both of our parts determined that … Read more

GlobalFax 2.6.2 Update: Maybe you can get it to install over 2.5.X

I offer no guarantees that this will work, but Bill Li writes that he solved the problem with getting the Global Village 2.6.2 Update to install over a 2.5.x version by using ResEdit to change the version number of all the component of GV 2.5.X to 2.6.0. He claims that you can then install the version 2.6.2 on the fake " GV 2.6.0" and that it "really works." It seems to me this could only work if the Updater actually replaces the existing files rather … Read more
