Sybase may face proxy fight

Business software company Sybase may be headed for a proxy fight, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. Sandall Asset Management, a company controlled by hedge fund manager Thomas Sandell, has notified Sybase that it plans to elect its own three candidates to the company's board. Sandell is Sybase's second-largest institutional investor.

The notice comes more than two months after Sandell asked Sybase to explore its strategic options, including putting itself up for sale, an initial public offering, or spinoff.

Police and press wise up to crime clips on YouTube

We've just witnessed a potentially disturbing marriage of basic street crime and the instant worldwide audience provided by video sharing and social networking sites such as YouTube and MySpace.

Criminals have often recorded their exploits for fun, but the ease of online sharing means that almost everyone can now witness assorted muggings, fights, and robberies from the safety of a laptop screen. At the same time, crimes posted to the Web get instant attention from law enforcement and the press, essentially acting as online wanted posters for the perpetrators. A perfect example is a recent subway attack video first … Read more

Investor continues to pressure Sprint CEO

Activist investor Ralph Whitworth is continuing to put pressure on Sprint Nextel CEO Gary Forsee, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Whitworth, who owns about 2 percent of Sprint's outstanding stock, told the WSJ that he has lost confidence in Forsee. While he stopped short of asking for Forsee's resignation, he said he'd like to see the company's board of directors make some management changes to get the company back on track.

Whitworth is most concerned about Sprint's investment in WiMax, a wireless-broadband technology that would greatly increase data speeds. The company has committed itself … Read more

Impromptu robot fight breaks out at Robo-One 12

I wasn't able to finagle my way to Japan to cover it, but the 12th Robo-One bipedal robot competition recently wrapped up on the island of Shikoku.

In addition to the regularly scheduled robot festivities, Robots Dreams captured this footage of a pick-up robot fight breaking out in the cafeteria. In it, a Hawaiian-shirt-clad chicken robot lays the smackdown on a more traditional robot. Enjoy. It's hard not to.

Nothing of this ilk would happen during lunchtime of our ongoing battle of the nonviolent robots. The robots would just sit there, trade snacks, and talk about stuff.

Marshmallow cannon blasts soft, sugary goodness 50 feet

Summertime is a great time to go camping, which usually includes a camp fire and the age old tradition of s'mores. Since you've almost always got leftover marshmallows, why not put them to use with this $40 marshmallow shooter? Not to be confused with its slightly less powerful cousin, this sucker shoots your precious marshmallows 50 feet and works with a healthy packing of mini marshmallows, too. It's also got pump action and a shiny chrome exterior that will likely blind your enemies, putting fear, and soft, gooey goodness into their hearts.
