Mozilla backs EFF in iPhone jailbreak support

Mozilla has thrown its support behind the Electronic Frontier Foundation's push to have the U.S. Copyright Office allow iPhone jailbreaking.

CEO John Lilly told Computerworld that "choice is good for users, and choice shouldn't be criminalized," in light of the dispute between the EFF and Apple over whether or not iPhone jailbreaking--the practice of modifying an iPhone to accept software from sources other than Apple--is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Dongle Boots JailBroken iPod Touch 2G

The iPhone Dev-Team has posted a new video that demonstrates the use of a dongle to boot a second generation iPod touch that was jailbroken.

The dongle is required to boot your iPod Touch when it isn't tethered to your computer. Otherwise, the current jailbreak requires that you tether the iPod touch to a computer. The dongle makes the solution portable for use while away from your computer.

This interesting and complicated development for hacking and jailbreaking the iPod touch might be an example of things to come as Apple persists in his view of jailbreaking as illegal.

Apple: iPhone jailbreaking violates our copyright

Apple recently told the U.S. Copyright Office that it believes iPhone jailbreaking is a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and infringes on its copyright, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

The EFF is trying to get the Copyright Office to grant a DMCA exemption on behalf of iPhone owners who have chosen to jailbreak their iPhones, or bypass the restriction Apple places on standard iPhones that only allows the installation of applications from approved sources: the App Store. Unlocking the iPhone 3G - or maybe not

Gadget blogs on New Year's Day were aflutter with word that an application called Yellowsn0w was available for those who want to unlock the iPhone 3G.

CrunchGear, for one, posted a graphically enhanced, QuickPwn-focused spin on jailbreaking the iPhone and making use of the Yellowsn0w instructions from the Dev-Team Blog. Way at the bottom, though, it points out that "this is all in beta and there is no guarantee of success." It follows with this note:

iPhone OS 2.2 Jailbreak Debuts

Our sister site, News.com, reports that, just two days after Apple released its iPhone 2.2 update, the iPhone Dev Team has released a jailbreak of the firmware.

The team on Saturday posted to its blog QuickPwn for 2.2 and Pwnage for 2.2 for Windows and Macintosh machines along with instructions on how to jailbreak iPhone 3G phones on 2.2.

The blog also includes a word of caution about baseband, the chip that controls the connection between the phone and the mobile phone network:

Does Apple's War on Jailbreaking Have a New Front?

Speculation that that Apple's newest MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops are preventing the jailbreaking of the iPhone and iPod Touch are swirling.

It's not clear what specifically is to blame for the failure of the iPhone Dev Team's PwnageTool jailbreak utility on the new systems, but iPhone users are reporting that these new Apple notebooks are failing to recognize their iPhone in DFU restore mode. This is an important portion of the jailbreaking process since the PwnageTool requires that the computer recognize the iPhone in DFU restore mode in order to perform the jailbreak.
