Meet the new entry-level Lambo

With only 20 in production and a $1.2 million price point, the Lamborghini Reventon is a little hard to come by. But if you're not among the privileged few who will get to drive, much less own, the 650-horsepower exotic, Lamborghini created a radio-controlled version of the Reventon to give the masses a taste of the action. A very little taste: the RC is 1:10 scale of the Reventon, with a 3cc gasoline engine mated to a two-speed transmission, a fully independent suspension with hydraulic shocks, and four-wheel disc brakes. … Read more

With Facebook Gifts demise, Credits are maturing

The way you should look at the just-announced demise of the Facebook Gifts feature is that it's a step in the evolution of e-commerce on the site. For Facebook Credits, the virtual currency that powered the marketplace of virtual knickknacks, the training wheels are now off. E-commerce on Facebook has moved beyond the relative safety of the company's internal test bed and can now be fully focused on getting pushed out to the social Web at large.

As Facebook has proven in the past two years, its financial success lies right there: building something relatively simple atop its … Read more

Facebook to close its Gift Shop

It's the end of the line for those drinks, birthday cakes, and pieces of flair on Facebook.

The social network announced Thursday that its Gift Shop--the feature it launched in 2007 that allows users to send personalized items to friends on the network--will close on August 1 to allow the company to focus on improving other features. Gifts that users receive before that date will continue to appear on their pages, and users will still be able to use third-party applications to send and receive greeting cards and other items.

"Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of … Read more

The 404 605: Where we pull the yellow card (podcast)

Today's episode of The 404 Podcast is all about techy gift recommendations for Father's Day, OpenBook exposing more Facebook privacy issues, and an amazing video of a Japanese beatboxer performing the Super Mario theme song.

We begin the show by pulling our own version of a yellow card in response to the questionable officiating in this morning's World Cup match between USA and Slovenia, but you'll have to tune in to hear our twist on the penalty.

Father's Day is this weekend, and if you still don't know what to get for your Dad, … Read more

Barnes & Noble offers $50 gift card with Nook

In a move that's sure to impact the e-reader pricing wars, Barnes & Noble has fired the first salvo with a $50 gift card offering when you purchase its $259 Nook eBook Reader.

While this technically doesn't qualify as a price cut, it definitely puts pressure on Amazon to either lower the price of the $259 Kindle or throw in a gift card or freebie of its own, such as a case (neither the Kindle or Nook comes with a protective carrying case). Needless to say, Barnes & Noble is trying to gain an advantage as we head … Read more

The 404 584: Where we make the cut (podcast)

If you weren't hungry before listening to today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast, you definitely will be afterward. And lucky for us, there are approximately 7,291 McDonalds locations in Manhattan for us to indulge our cravings for grease. We're also considering moving our uncomfortably hot recording studio to the McDonalds around the corner, mostly because they're about to get a lot more comfortable.

Over the next year, most of its locations will transform into the fast food chain of the future with new "linger zones" that feature Wi-Fi connectivity, comfortable armchairs, … Read more

Friday Poll: For your mom, a geeky gift?

You're reading Crave, so there's a pretty good chance you're something of a geek at heart. As such, there's a very good chance your Mother's Day gift this year will be of the tech variety, or at least have some kind of a geek slant. Because as a geek, you know that even non-geeks' lives can be better with tech.

I, for example, plan on getting my mother the boxed set of every episode of "Lost" so far, as well as a Netflix account. My friend Mike is upgrading his mother's computer … Read more

Mother's Day gifts you haven't thought of

Moms, as we all know, are hardly a monolith. It is thus challenging to assemble a definitive list of Mother's Day gift ideas for moms who've conquered their BlackBerrys, moms who can't send a text, moms who think video games embody the world's ills, and even moms who spend all their free time on World of Warcraft.

In an effort to make your last-minute Mom's Day shopping easier, Crave has come up with a few ideas for mothers of varying stripes. From the digicam-happy mom to Octomom to the uber-green mom, we've got yours … Read more

The 404 572: Where it's time for a downgrade (podcast)

Jeff Bakalar is out sick today but luckily Natali Del Conte is back from her sojourn to San Francisco and fills in on today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast. I hope you had a better weekend than mine; I almost had a sleepover at the Apple Store after my iPhone inexplicably broke...again! The display on my 6-month-old phone stopped working, so I've decided to stick it out with a budget Samsung flip phone until the fourth-generation iPhone comes out.

Downgrading to a single-function handset from an iPhone requires some adjustment, but I'm quickly getting used to (and even enjoying) the simplicity of having separate dedicated devices for music and phone calls.

Boredom arrives much quicker without a smartphone, of course, but who really needs all those silly apps? I'm having a great time rediscovering the simple mundane pleasure of scrolling through "settings and options." What time increment should I set my auto-dimmer to today? The possibilities are endless!

Last night CBS' "60 Minutes" aired an interview with Conan O'Brien to get his personal take on the "Tonight Show" fiasco that left poor CoCo without a network to call a home.

Unfortunately, neither NDC nor I had a chance to check it out, but Wilson gives us the rundown on Conan's amicable responses and explains why Conan starts crying halfway through the segment. Check out CBS News for the full interview.

There are also plenty of hilarious Calls From the Public to play today including one listener who finally debuts an impression of Jeff that you won't want to miss. If you have something to tell us, leave us a message at 1-866-404-CNET or shoot us a line at the404(at)CNET(dot)com!

Apple lets you give the gift of apps

Until yesterday, the only way to buy an app for someone other than yourself was to give an iTunes gift card and say, "This is so you can buy Words With Friends." Lame, right?

Now, giving the gift of apps is a whole lot easier. In iTunes, just click the pull-down menu next to an app's Buy button, then click Gift This App.

From there you'll fill out a short form, starting with how you want to deliver your gift: e-mail or printed certificate.

The latter, of course, is just like what you get when buying … Read more
