A back order of MacBooks at Best Buy could be yet another sign that Apple has new notebooks around the corner.

Best Buy is showing a one- to two-week delay on both 15.4-inch $1,999 MacBook Pros--the exact configuration that was rumored to be on tap earlier this month--as well as 13.3-inch MacBooks. AppleInsider has uncovered a patent filing from Apple (located here) that's a cross between what we've known as an "enhanced podcast" and the step-by-step driving directions found on the maps application that is on the iPhone and iPod touch.

In short, the design specified in the patent would let users grab driving directions (presumably from Google) and have them combined with voice activated commands that would advance the directions forward. The data would be packaged in the form of a Podcast that could be downloaded and put on the player like any other audio file.

A lot of folks were understandably upset when Apple released five new applications for the iPod Touch that currently exist on the iPhone (Mail, Stocks, Notes, Weather, and Maps), and then proceeded to charge $20 for the package. Now, they're even more upset. Apparently, Apple's insistence on selling Touch owners the $20 upgrade is sending some of them into an unending loop of refusal and redirection.

Among the many complaints I have about the iPhone, 3G certainly sits atop the list. Instead of allowing me to surf around the Web at blazing speeds, Apple must have thought that a 3G device just wasn't good enough for me at this point and I would need to break into the iPhone world with a dog slow cell phone.

But as sales of the iPhone start to slow and the chances of Steve Jobs hitting the 10 million units sold mark dwindle, Apple is looking for ways to turn things around. And according to one report from Citibank, a 3G iPhone could be all the company needs to do just that.
