RealNetworks today gets into the cloud storage game with its new RealPlayer Cloud app. Available on a multitude of platforms, RealPlayer Cloud takes a videocentric approach to storage, and its success could mean a sort of rebirth for the arguably irrelevant streaming-media company.
At first glance, RealPlayer Cloud might seem like just another storage service, as it gives new users 2GB of free storage (US and Canada only) and offers premium plans that start at $4.99 per month. What sets this multiplatform app apart from other cloud storers like Dropbox and Google Drive, however, is that it is exclusively … Read more
Eleven-year-old StumbleUpon, a Web and mobile destination for exploring digital content, has made its first acquisition, picking up pre-launched Canadian startup 5by in an attempt to master video recommendations on smartphones. Terms of the deal, which closed in mid-September, were not disclosed.
Founded in 2012, 5by is in the process of building an iOS and Android application for finding videos to watch based on your mood. The 5by mobile application will continue to be developed and released as a standalone product in the coming months, StumbleUpon CEO Mark Bartels told CNET. A beta desktop version of the experience is already … Read more
Adobe on Monday released its latest version of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, the lower-cost versions of the company's photo- and video-editing suites geared toward hobbyists.
Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12 have been overhauled to incorporate cloud-based functionality and a revamped editing experience, the company said in a statement.
"Our customers have a lot of photos and videos, and they love to use their home computers to organize them and be creative, but they also want the freedom and flexibility to view, edit, and share on their mobile devices," Lea Hickman, Adobe's vice president … Read more
PicPlayPost isn't new to the App Store; however, its sudden success is. It's been around since 2012, but only recently made it to the top paid-app spot in the App Store.
Photo framing apps are nothing new and there are a slew of them in the App Store. Each one allows you to place photos in combinations of frames, aspect ratios, frame colors, and sizes to make a kind of collage. But what's interesting about an app like PicPlayPost is that it goes beyond the standard frames and filters, and lets you incorporate videos into your creations. … Read more
Apple wasn't the first smartphone maker to include a slow-motion camera feature, nor will it be the last.
But with more than 9 million iPhones sold in its opening weekend, and most of those expected to be the 5S, there are going to be a lot of slow-motion videos floating around.
We've compiled some of the best early ones from the past few days below.
Doing backflips on a bike, with a soundtrack:
A dog eating water, or in Internet terms, re-enacting the WHARRGARBL:
Horses being majestic:
If you're one of those paranoid types who worries that the iPhone 5S and its new fingerprint sensor could lead to a rash of finger amputations by would-be thieves, the below videos could offer some comfort -- or lead to even gorier nightmares.
According to Japan's Rocket News, it appears to be possible to register other uniquely "printed" parts of your body on your iPhone 5S and use them to unlock the phone. In this first demonstration, the phone is successfully unlocked with a man's nipple. He then passes the device on to his friend, and the iPhone fails to recognize his buddy's bosom. … Read more
Video games can cost a fortune, but if you're just a little patient, sometimes an opportunity comes around to obtain hot titles for next to nothing. For example, Amazon has a screaming deal going on the entire Bioshock trilogy -- Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Bioshock Infinite -- for only $19.99 until September 25.
According to Amazon, the deal slices 75 percent off retail pricing, which translates to $59.98 in savings. If you're not interested in buying all three games and would rather buy only Bioshock and Bioshock 2, Amazon has the duo at only $4.99.… Read more

Don't miss these five clips showing 120fps video in action.… Read more
Music videos are no small potatoes for YouTube, and Google's looking at making them bigger in Google Search results -- literally.
As part of Google's quest to more tightly integrate its different services, the company appears to be experimenting with how music videos appear in Google Search results, according to the blog Google Operating System. The top search result for a music video would be a significantly larger preview of the video itself, in the style of a Google Now card, with additional information such as the artist name, song title, album name, and year released.
