Use your Apple TV to view movie showtimes in nearby theaters

Being able to watch a movie trailer while deciding which movie to go watch the same night, or in anticipation of a new release isn't a new feature on Apple TV. You open the Trailers app, select the trailer you want to watch, and it's streaming in just a few minutes on your HDTV. Up until now, though, you couldn't view local showtimes if you found a movie you wanted to go watch. Thankfully, showtimes have been added to the Apple TV with software update 5.1; and it's very easy to access.

Massive 'Indiana Jones' exhibit headed to U.S.

The "Indiana Jones" film saga contains a plethora of real-world archaeology and stunning cinematography, an epic score by John Williams, and cunning characters. Perhaps the greatest charm of the movies, however, falls upon the main protagonist played by Harrison Ford.

To celebrate the legacy of the films more than 30 years after the Indiana Jones franchise debuted with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," National Geographic and Lucasfilm teamed with X3 Productions on the Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology exhibition, which is set to open October 12 at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, Calif. The exhibit runs through April 21, 2013, and features an extensive collection of film props, set designs, models, and concept art used in the films. … Read more

Seiko unleashes stylish 'Star Wars' watches

Timing is everything, especially in the "Star Wars" saga. For example, had Han Solo missed that critical shot on the TIE fighter in the trenches of the Rebel assault on the first Death Star, Luke Skywalker would have been toast -- and so would the rebellion against the Empire.

On October 12, Japanese watchmaker Seiko commemorates "Star Wars" in a new collection of themed watches with a collective run of only 5,000 pieces. Six popular characters from the movies each get their own model: Darth Vader, Darth Maul, C-3PO, R2-D2, Yoda, and the lemming-like Stormtrooper. … Read more

Biz Stone, Ron Howard oversee a tweeted movie

They've made so many movies inspired by eating. They've made movies inspired by dancing dirty.

Surely there had to come a time when there'd be a movie inspired by twittering.

Oh, joy, that time has come.

For soon we will witness a tweet-based movie directed by that Hollywood legend Oliver Stone.

No, wait. I have left a stone unturned there. The director is Biz Stone. Yes, that sweet man in glasses who co-founded Twitter.

Those of cynical mind and dubious heart will wonder what on earth Stone knows about directing.

Well, it seems that he will be … Read more

In the past, it was easier to load the Redbox Web site and reserve copies of movies or games there. Grab a copy of the new Redbox app for your mobile Android device. You will need Internet connectivity to use the … Read more

Apple's map flop stirs new mobile battle

Thursday's CNET Update feels a little lost:

Apple's got a bit of a mess on its hands. A map mess. In the upgrade to iOS 6, Apple has replaced maps powered by Google with its own new creation. But depending on where you roam, map results can be inaccurate or hard to decipher. Examples of glitchy moments, inaccuracies and lack of data have been posted on the Tumblr blog "The Amazing iOS 6 Maps." If you upgraded to iOS 6, you can access Google Maps via the browser. You can also bookmark maps.google.com as … Read more

Behind the curtain at Google's Cirque du Soleil show

Google Chrome and Cirque du Soleil have partnered to show off the potential of the modern Web with an all-HTML5 Cirque performance that's unique to the Web, called Movi.Kanti.Revo.

The name comes from the Esperanto terms for moving, singing, and dreaming, according to the official Movi.Kanti.Revo Google announcement, and the experience does go to great lengths to create a dreamlike world on the Web. During different scenes of Movi .Kanti.Revo (pronounced MOOV-ee CANT-ee REEV-oh), you can interact with the site by moving your body or speaking to your computer. If that sounds a lot … Read more

Cinema ninjas dispatch yapping, phone-using movie goers

When I'm in a theater in the midst of a gripping, dramatic film and I see the telltale glow of someone's cell phone, I feel like rising up out of my seat, tiptoeing silently through the aisles, and using my mad ninja skills to silence the offender.

The Prince Charles Cinema in London is way ahead of me. Movie patrons who can't shut up or can't resist the temptation of a text message will get a visit from a black body suit-wearing volunteer ninja.

There are no nunchucks or ninja stars, but the face-hiding suits should strike enough terror in the violators' hearts to get them back in line. … Read more
