A planner and diary in one

At first glance, Smart Diary seems similar to many other planners, with various calendar views and the ability to set tasks. What really sets Smart Diary apart is its diary feature, which is unlike anything we've seen before in this sort of program.

The program's interface is attractive and intuitive, with a surprisingly sleek calendar design. It's easy to do all the basics, like adding events and tasks, scheduling reminders, printing schedules, and so on. Everything is neatly arranged with tabs and drop-down menus, allowing users to quickly find the functions they want. What really impressed us … Read more

Expert: iPhone 3GS crypto is easily crackable

The encryption functionality of the iPhone 3GS is so easy to crack that it is essentially "broken" as far as protecting sensitive personal data like credit card and social security numbers, according to a forensics expert and iPhone developer.

"I don't think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it's hard to describe why it's such a big threat to security," Jonathan Zdziarski told Wired.

With physical access to a 3GS iPhone and some free software data can be extracted within two minutes and an … Read more

Three approaches to free encrypted online storage

One of the knocks against Google's online applications is that your personal data is stored unencrypted on the company's servers. For the many users of Google apps who are unconcerned about somebody snooping around their files, this won't matter. But those servers are no place to store sensitive personal or business information.

You can store your financial and other confidential information online for free by using a service such as Mozy or IDrive that encrypts the data on their servers, usually in a way that prevents the service's own employees from decrypting it. I looked at … Read more

Restore a lost administrator account in Vista

A reader named Eric found himself locked out of his Vista administrator accounts:

"Somehow, my account and my son's accounts were downgraded to standard user on his new computer using Vista Home 32-bit. I cannot seem to log in to make any changes to the accounts now. It prompts me to enter a password but no password box is available to type it in. How can I log in to change my account back to administrator?"

In a post last year, I described how to enable Vista's hidden administrator account and password-protect XP's default administrator … Read more

Google considers request to boost privacy

Updated at 4:45 p.m. PST to clarify that Gmail data has always been encrypted by default when a user types in https:// and that last year they offered the ability to set https:// as the default.

More than three dozen security and privacy advocates and researchers are asking Google to offer better data protection for users of Gmail and other Google apps and Google said on Tuesday that it is considering doing that, if it doesn't slow down the apps too much.

You may not know this but you can set Gmail to encrypt your session data by defaultRead more

On encryption and why it's overrated

I ran across a recent blog post by storage vendor Cleversafe titled "Three Reasons Why Encryption is Overrated," and as I suspected it generated a lot of discussion in online forums (LinkedIn, Google Groups, log-in required for both) dedicated to those issues.

Beyond the sensationalist headline, the post does raise some interesting points for consideration on the topic of encryption.

Future processing power--In the future, malicious hackers will be able to crack older encrypted files due to increases in processing speed.

Key management--An encrypted file has a key to unlock it. Lots of files means lots of keys. … Read more

No-nonsense file encryption

Though we would have liked more encryption options, this program sports a very basic, easy-to-use interface that is perfect for novice users.

Secura Archiver features an intuitive menu toolbar. The corresponding command buttons are colorful and to the point. Getting started was very easy; as all we had to do was click the New button to create a new database. We were able to add new files very quickly by browsing for, and checking off on, the files we wanted to archive in our newly created database. Likewise, deleting selected files from the archive involved the simple click of the … Read more

Errors impede performance

Password Memory 2009 is a free program that aims to keep your usernames and passwords in check. However, a glitch produced errors that prevented us from successfully saving our password information.

The user interface resembles the standard Microsoft interface, so it will look familiar to most people. Prominent command buttons to add, open, and delete password profiles are easily found. The program contains a search feature to look up a specific profile. We found it extremely intuitive, and we were able to quickly create a new password profile. Creating a new profile requires that you enter your username and password … Read more
