Is Kodak's new Zx1 better than the Flip Mino HD?

Last year, Kodak was first out the gate with an HD minicamcorder, the Zi6. That model was pretty good and won some fans for its decent video quality and relatively large LCD display. This year, Kodak's sticking with much the same as far as the guts of the camcorder, but it's evolved to a more rugged design that's geared toward consumers with "action and adventure in mind."

The $149.99 Zx1 incorporates the same 1/4.5-inch 1.6-megapixel sensor as the Zi6. However, according to Kodak, it has upgraded the processor in this model, … Read more

Kodak's new pocket-10: the EasyShare Z915

The only announcement to come from Kodak at PMA 2009 was for the EasyShare Z915: a $199.95 pocketable 10-megapixel compact camera with a 10X optical zoom lens and optical image stabilization. It's also powered by two, AA batteries and features a smallish (by today's standards at least) 2.5-inch LCD.

So it's a lot like the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS, except slightly higher resolution and a smaller LCD, but $50 less expensive. Or like the $299 Samsung HZ10W minus the 24mm-equivalent wide-angle lens or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3, though that one's $399 and features a … Read more

Cheap shots: Compact cameras under $150

With PMA 2009 nearing, camera manufacturers are rolling out their spring compact point-and-shoot lineups, making it a good time to hunt down deals on last year's models.

Here's a collection of cameras that are already fairly inexpensive for what they offer. Keep in mind, being as low priced as they are, that you should not expect perfect photo quality or blazing-fast performance.

What you will get is a decent pocket camera for very little investment with generally simple operation and the occasional extra feature like a 5X optical zoom or advanced face detection.

Bill Gates stocks up on Crocs, Kodak

It's always interesting to note where Bill Gates is putting his money.

Fortunately, his Cascade Investment arm details his largest holdings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to regulatory filings made on Wednesday, Gates' Cascade Investment arm (along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) now holds, among other things, a 5.2 percent stake in Eastman Kodak.

It's not the first photography-related investment for Gates, who owns stock photography company Corbis.

Barron's reporter Eric Savitz also noted Gates holdings in companies ranging from $1.28 billion worth of Canadian National Railway to $391 million worth … Read more
